Thread: I think my turbo has now died completely. Plumes of smoke. Advice needed

  1. Default I think my turbo has now died completely. Plumes of smoke. Advice needed

    Hi Everyone,

Any help or advise would be great, as I think I have another MPS 3 (2007) which has had a turbo seal failure

Was driving completely fine all Saturday day, however went to drive later in the evening, and straight away noticed plumes of smoke when I was reversing out of the driveway.

It hardly smokes at idle, but give it a few revs and it creates plumes of smoke.. it appears to idle and run smoothly, which leads me to think its the turbo? I have heard it could be the headers, valves or even pcv system??

With a turbo, what is the best option for replacing this? I have a mate who will be able to help me replace the turbo, but I am unsure which turbo would be best to purchase, or even if reconditioning would be the best? I am not looking at upgrading, and hoping for a direct replacement without a need for re-tune (currently running a Stage 1 Cobb tune, would this need to be removed?)

With turbos I did find the following options?
    Mazda 3 6 2.3 CX-7 MZR DISI 2005 K0422-882 Turbo Turbocharger L3M713700C/D | eBay
    BNR Supercars - Bryan Nickell's Rotary Supercars - Mazdaspeed3/Mazdaspeed6/CX7

With the BNR link it states (Core exchange required), I assume they require my current turbo for parts?

Anyway, any help or advise would be great.
    Cheers
    Glenn

    I'd say trurbo

Core exchange not required you can buy a core from BNR. I would ask for price on core as the cost of postage might be higher

    Hey mate,
So you wouldnt think its the rings, valves or header?

I am obviously just trying to keep costs low, and therefore have not taken to mazda mechanic, however my mate is fairly certain its the turbo.
Once the turbo is removed, can it then be diagnosed as the actual cause do you know?

Also with the BNR turbo do you know if this would require a re-tune ( I am/was currently running a Stage 1 OTS Cobb AP tune)

    Cheers

Mate, I hate to say it but I wouldnt be running it or starting it. Put it on a tow truck and take it to a specialist shop or dealer.
We cant be sure either way from here, unless someone with knowledge is willing to donate their time and visit you.. And any advice can be wrong.
Trust in a professional, penny pinching now could cost you a bunch later - even if you just get the diagnosis done by a workshop.

EDIT - where are you located?

Cheers mate, my mate is a mechanic, and he is confident it is the Turbo, I was just trying to get other people opinions, but as you said wont know for certain without having it looked by a proper workshop, so will be speaking to mate tomorrow to work out the best way forward,

Any ideas where best I could have it diagnosed?

I am located in Maylands, however my car is now at my mates place in Balajura

    Hi Glenn.

Sorry to hear about your problems.
i'm guessing that the smoke is white??

Have you recently upgraded your DP?
Have you started the car cold and let it idle, A/C on, for 10-15 minutes, to check the smoking?

It could well be upper engine problems, but turbo seems more common.
Try the PCValve first. It may work and save you a shed load.

It may not be financially viable to remove the turbo purely for the purpose of inspection; by the time you've got it out, you'd be better off having examined the other options first. If you are confident that it's stuffed, pull it out and replace it, I'd say.

A BNR stage 1 may not need a retune, but anything above that certainly will.

    Pete.

    Hey mate,
I had the seals on my turbo go. However the only difference with our scenarios is my smoke would dissappear when I rev it and smoke on idle. Just my two cents worth.
Ps when my turbo was replaced issue was sorted

    Hi Everyone,

Cheers for the response, and advice

Yes the smoke is certainly white.

My mate and I had already decided to hold off removing the Turbo, as we have only really looked at it for a couple of hours,
we will try running it again tonight or tomorrow when time permits, and let it run to ensure its still smoking and as suggested try looking at the PCV valve also.

    Will report back soon,

    Thanks again everyone.

    Hi Everyone,

AN update, my mate before taking everything apart, and removing turbo to inspect, he ran my car again, and with much surprise it was no longer smoking.

I have since driven my car all week and no sign of any smoking again. Which is very strange.

There was obviously a build up of oil somewhere which has now burnt itself out...?

I will be monitoring it over the next few weeks, and will then decide if its best to have it looked at by a workshop, however a number of friends have advised without any symptons, mechanics will find it hard to diagnose.

Again if anyone has any theorie and advice, let me know, cheers

Next time it happens (and it will) rev the motor in idle to about 2k and see if it stops

Thanks mate I will try that.
Tthough initially when it happened for me it was the opposite. Mine was not smoking at idle, however when revved, smoke poured out. (like a huge burnout)

I have a 2007 MPS3 Gen 1 & she smokes occasionally (2-3 times a week) on idle. i have explored a few options & BNR S3 is what I will probably go with.
I have recently been in contact with Bryan & he has indicated he has no cores left & will not sell to you unless he receives a core.
So if you are heading the BNR way i suggest sourcing a core either in the States or in Aus & ship.......
