Has anyone done the budget approach of attaching a pod filter directly
to the factory piping with some mods to the airbox lid ? I saw it on a U.S
forum , it looked a bit dodgy but it apparently works great for the price
    of a pod filter .

I did look at doing that be would take a fair amount of modding to the airbox lid and you would be better finding some off cut piping and modifing that.

That scares me....for $300 you can buy the genuine item - which has been tested and less change of blowing up your engine!

Apparently it's safe because you use the factory pipe with the sensor in the
standard location, problems seem to occur when either the pipe diameter changes
or the sensor is in a different location

sensor location and housing diameter are based on the air box though....... after market SRI and CAI and reconfigured and tuned (we hope) to run an exposed POD style filter, new length, and diameter e.t.c so adapting the current to take a POD could i guess cause some issues... worst case.. boom.. but would be full on if it did...

i brought an adapter from local zorst shop on my old corolla to add a pod on.. was just dual sized piece of pipe... but that was only a rolla.. not really highly tunes machine that would blow up.... even though it eventually did.. but that was from lots of hard driving haha

There is an airbox mod which can be done to remove some of the restrictions and silencers......

When I said "blow up your engine" that was al little over the top - inhale small rodent? That'll do it
