Thread: Cleaner gear shifts. Gearbox mount which won't break my balls?

  1. #1

Default Looking for smoother gear shifts - improving mounts without vibes breaking my balls

So, after having installed the Hypertech tune, the increase in torque has made my gear shifts not as crisp and feels like I've gone a step backwards. I've already got the 60duro CPE rear mount.

What I want is a better shift feel without having the cabin rattle my balls off. Whether I can achieve that is another question.

    Edited the list of options
    The choices I have are:
    a) increase stiffness of rear mount
    b) get gearbox mount
    c) get gearbox and drivers mount
    d) Turbine Tech front engine mount
    e) PTP Kicker mount
    f) all of the above

But I'm certain that option F will ensure balls get thoroughly detached.

I've read up on getting a gearbox mount, and all the current options seem to indicate that yes, gear shifts is definitely improved, but you guessed it, you lose your balls (and ears due to gearbox whine).

Maybe I just need to grow bigger balls, but I like my serenity in cabin, until I want to give it some gas.

Also I don't think uprating the rear mount to the 75duro will provide enough hold, though input here would be great. I much prefer the idea of spreading the load, rather than relying solely on the rear mount.

The current list of gearbox mounts that are known to me are:
    - AWR
    - Streetunit
    - TRZ
    - this ebay mount (MazdaSpeed 3 transmission mount. 07-2010 - eBay (item 180587339045 end time Dec-14-10 02:02:25 PST))

Don't get a TRZ if you don't like vibe...those things are stiffer than a week on Viagra

Just came across an alternative to the gearbox mount, a front engine mount Turbinetech

researching to see if NVH is increased much. pricey, but I rather paying more $$$ than have to deal with vibes and noise

So I've been researching my options and have also come across the PTP Kicker mount PT-Performance.com

Anyone used either the Turbine Tech or PTP mounts?

Following on from Col's post above, I just installed a 75 Duro into my Gen 2.

Has done a fantastic job of cleaning up the gearshifts. Not sure how dramatic the difference is between the 60 and the 75 though

Been talking with Turbine Tech and in particular Jess (R&D manager and CEO) regarding the front engine mount. Here are a few quotes

I don't think crisper is the proper term. Night and day difference would be more appropriate. The CPE mount do absolutely nothing compared to the changes our front engine mount makes.
If you browsed a couple of Mazda forums, you probably noticed that little to no people complain about increased vibrations or noise. Slight vibrations are noticeable when the car sits at idle with A/C on. Other than that, you won't be able to tell once the car is rolling. The engine mount bracket is grooved so that you can install it without any preload on the bushing. The mount will only do its job during shifts and hard pulls. All in all, the benefits will certainly overcome any side effect the mount may have.
It certainly seems promising. I will be soon ordering one to see if his claims are true (which I truly hope they are). Expensive bit of kit due to the shipping costs and hopefully not a dud mod. fingers crossed. will post up impressions which will most likely be in the start of the new year. If anyone else is interested, let me know and I'll see what they can do

Hey I am currently looking at engine mount options and I was wondering how the Turbine Tech mount went?
