Thread: Aftermarket Radiator Caps (Greddy,Mazdaspeed,,,etc)

    Default Aftermarket Radiator Caps (Greddy,Mazdaspeed,,,etc)

after getting my MPS6 back from its 80K km service, i was told i will be needing some replacement parts. one of the parts was a radiator cap, which they quoted $52.

so i've been flicking through the MPS garage website looking up all sorts of aftermarket parts...to weigh up the cost between getting the dealer to fit genuine mazda parts or getting an aftermarket one.

i came across these aftermarket radiator caps (Greddy,Mazdaspeed and some other brand) that are selling for between $40 - $150!!

they mention being able to put 1.3 bar? of pressure? so higher pressure = higher boiling point in radiator? which i assume will affect the stock radiator and other parts?

any thoughts/recommendations/experiences with regards to the effect that installing these aftermarket caps have on a stock car?

or is this just a big snake oil product to con all the wannabe racerboys?

    Hi JohnnyC,

That's right the aftermarket Radiator Caps will hold an higher pressure, therefore increasing the point temp. But There's a lot more to your cooling system then just adding the Cap.
Increased pressure will impact on other components, but if your staging your mods, you will notice the different down the track when your running temps are higher.

The MPS is in stock and I'm not planning on doing any mods, will these aftermarket radiator caps be ok to use on a stock car or is an OEM radiator cap a better option?

I wouldn't run a higher pressure radiator cap. Basically its going to be adding stress to the cooling system as its under more pressure. The main purpose of the aftermarket caps is to raise the boiling temperature. You should look at other ways to improve cooling before going down this method. Basically, for a stock car or even a moderately modded car, its not needed.

I dont think you have cooling issues, its just that the cap may be opening prematurely not holding the pressure
