    Question 245/40/R18 on RX8 Rim for a GenI MPS3?

    Time for new tryes

    Looking at my options, I'm running the Seriers 1 RX-8 Rims, with mazdaspeed lowering springs (stock camber arms though)

    Options:
    - 225/45/18 <-- Not going these
    - 235/40/18 <-- Good cause they are wider and cheaper
    - 245/40/18 <-- Wider again (yes im a lateral grip whore) unknown pricing at this point.

    Questions:
    - Has anyone here run these? Seems like a popular choice on the RX8 forums.
    - Is it likely to rub? (its going to be 10mm wider...)

    I want to avoid a guard roll of I can!

    Thoughts/opinions appreciated!

    You won't be able to go 245 without a savage guard roll. In fact pumping them a bit would probably be necessary.
    215/45 on 18x8+48 will rub in rare circumstances
    So 235/40 on 18x8+50 (RX-8 rims) will probably need a roll
    I'm on 225/45 wrapped over 18x7.5+48 and while most mainstream tyres are fine with no rub, if you go KU-36 or Falken RT-615, a roll becomes necessary to completely eliminate likelyhood of rubbing.

    I have gone from a Kumho KU19 235/35/19 on a 19 x 8 +45 rim to a Kumho KU36 225/40/18 on a 18 x 8 +45, the KU36, although narrower on spec, actually has an equal if not slightly wider footprint than the KU19's, I did have the odd rub with the 19's, and Im sure the 18's will do the same if I try hard enough, I am also running Eibach springs so the car is a little lower than stock.

    Duly noted. I'll stick with the 235's this time around, but might consider 245's and a guard roll down the track

    Mmm that's what I'm concerned about, raodtrip in Jan wil have 4+ people in the car with 2 weeks worth of luggage. Safe to say that the car wil be FULLY loaded.

    I have 225/40 on RX8 rims on the rear. The narrower tyre on the wide rim actually holds the sidewall in place, so less sidewall flex when cornering. No gaurd rolling, I have no rub ever, even with 150kg+ in the rear.

    Bump for an old thread.

    Seems like I might be able to get away with 245/40s on RX8 wheels (18x8+50) with guard rolling? Can anyone kindly confirm? Thanks

    ps: mps6 with h&r springs

    Hey there.

    Glad you asked!

    I'm running RX8 rims on my Gen 1 MPS with this setup;

    front: 225/40
    rear: 245/35. See here for pics;

    Clearance is okay at the rear. I'm lowered on coilovers and the firm setup stops the tyres from rubbing. I would like the rear lowered a little more but will require some guard rolling for clearance.

    IMO 245/40 are a big baggy tyre and look a bit silly on 18x8's. Also the 245/35's lower profile gives the same grip will less side wall movement.

    235/40 is the most popular size for MPS 6's on RX8 rims. Guard rolling will be needed for sure if you go for 245's on an MPS6.

    You might also need to be aware that 245's of any size may rub on the front strut if you use a 50+ offset wheel

    ^true. This is why I've got 225/40 at the front. But not all people are keen on a staggered fitment. If you're picking one size all round I'd go 235/40.

    Thanks Tom, appreciate the reply. I do agree that 245/35 will have less sidewall flex, but I don't want it to be stiff. I'll play around with a spare 245/40 tyre I have stored in the garage. I'll put it under the fender to gauge what kind of work and offset I'd need.

    My backup is 235/40/18

    I am not 100% sure, but 245 would likely need a +45 or less offset, and some serious guard rolling to fit.

    245 will just fit under a Gen 2 guard with an 8.5" rim at +45 offset.
