Thread: Removing door protector strips

  1. #1

    Default Removing door protector strips

Who has tried removing those plastic/rubber strips that go along the doors in a Gen 1 MPS 3? I would imagine it'd be a straight forward process of heating the strips with a hair dryer or heat gun then ripping the strips and adhesive off.

Question is, will any paint come off after removal? I know for some cars, these strips come off quite easily without issues but others can be quite stuck on and take some paint off along the process. I'd be keen to hear from people who have done this before.

No paint will come off. Just make sure its heated sufficiently . Any leftover residue i removed with bug & tar remover. They do pull off quite easily. A panel beater told me to use NOTHING harder than your fingernail when scraping your paintwork.

So no marks whatsoever after removal?

So you're wanting to remove them permanently? Or put them back on later?

Yeah permanently I guess. It looks a lot smoother with them off and a lot of late model cars don't have them anymore. Reminds me of the Gen 2 MPS 3

Still thinking about whether to remove them or not though..

I have done it and its SUPER easy.

Best bet is to wait for a hot day and go slowly and you shouldn't have a problem

I did mine just tthis previous weekend.. I got a cotton rag, slipped it into the edge of the strip,, pulled it up and down a few times.. so that about 5cm of the strip had come away.. then i just slowly pulled the remaining strip off.. Easy..

The hardest part is cleaning the residue off.. i used brake cleaner ( was no good), then i tried degreaser ( worked a bit better).. Claybar does nothing too.. would have tried carby cleaner or eucalyptus oil if i had some..

You want to use a Wax and Grease remover to get the double sided tape off afterwards. the easiest way is with something called a 'caramel wheel" not sure where youd get one though. We get them from our paint supplier. it goes in a drill. It is by far the fastest easiest way to remove pin stripes or double sided tape left behind from removing door moulds or badges. Next option is wax and grease remover also known as Prepsol.

I had quite a few K on mine when I took them off. After all of the above came off good, cleaned up with bug and tar remover, however the leading point of the drivers side had gathered a bit of road dust, and it needs a cut and polish to remove that all together.

Yup I also ended up doing this. Very easy to remove. Everyone has their own ways but I went over the strips with a hair dryer then ripped them off. I used polish/wax to remove the residue.
