Default Modifying stock airox on GEN 1 MPS3

    Hi all.
Today at work, I pulled out my air filter lower box part, and cut it to allow more air in.
I just pulled it out, which was straight forward, and cut it. Hope these pics help show what to do once it's out...

This is the box looking straight at it, the part to cut is the right hand side of the box. Like so...

This should allow LOTS more flow.

THOUGHTS: I'm not sure about performance, but two things come to mind initially. 1. The engine seems less asthmatic, and 2. Turbo induction noise has increased. Not a stupid, LOUD noise, but it IS evident now.
See how it goes over the next couple of weeks...

I dunno if it's me or not, but my 'tricky' clutch has now become less 'tricky'. Probably to do with how easy it is to get the engine off idle.
And I can notice my blow off valve sounding now too. Goodbye stealth

I've done the same to my box. did it a couple of months ago. better than the sri - I hated that sound @ 1/2 throttle.

A great idea and seems to make a different too!! I know this mod works wonders on VY and VX Commodores (wifes car)

I played around with the stock airbox in the 3 when I was between SRI and CAI problems (gotta love custom intakes ) and I almost went down this road but never had the guts

I think I've read this post before, Rino. Kinda what inspired me to do it. I was just gonna wait for my intake from Troy, but now it's been delayed, I thought I'd give it a shot. Seems to be better for my engine so far.

this is great news. I was contemplating whether I could just mod the stock airbox along with streetunit's silicone hose and cobb's TIP to keep it as stealth as possible, while making the intake less restrictive. I was reading on other forums and a lot of people argue that modding the stock airbox was stupid and was not as good as a SRI or cAI. I could not see their logic as opening the stock airbox should have similar results. They talk about being 'ghetto' and 'cheap' but for me, its all about stealth. I know the filter is not too restrictive, but does anyone know (besides K&N) if theres a highflowing filter just to help the cause?

Mate, I got my best dyno output with the stock filter in the stock airbox. We dyno'd a K&N panel filter and found it to drop 5kw. The K&N are more about durability/longevity than outright flow (so I'm told).

Wow really!! Bugga...K&N need to do something then because this is straight from a description on the filter

I had a K&N panel filter on my XR8 years ago. It made a HUGE difference. Want stealth??? Keep your stock box, but modify it like I have, AND put in a K&N panel filter. I think MAGNAFLOW do one too. Brands are not hard to find for filters. Quality ones are. Don't know why you lost HP, Yeldarb...

    for troy!
    keep up the awesome work!
thinking about modifying my airbox as well... but if troy is going to have a stealth option coming... might take that over a SRI/CAI
