Thread: Hi!

  1. Default Hi!

    Purchased a black MPS 6 two weeks ago and found this forum! Was inspired to look into the MPS based on a review on Top Gear and have not been disapointed! Found it hard to find a good version without high KM but finaly found one in Adelaide which had been traded in on a BMW and looked to be in great condition so flew over and drove it back to Sydney. Love the ability to cruize in 6th on the open road and then drop to 5th for the fly by overtake.

    Look forward to gaining from everyone's wisdom in the forums!

    Thanks for the kind welcome all. Blackbetty, I purchased the MPS from a dealer so not sure who the owner was before me. I have attached a photo below! The MPS is the leather pack and stock with some window tinting and has 44k on the clock. Am intending to remove the Mazda 6 badge and just leave the MPS badge on the back. Am considering engine modifications but assume that would decrease my fuel economy on the highway?

    Oh, and in response to your other question, am located in Pyrmont, Sydney.

    Hi mate and to the forum! I hope you enjoy your stay and searching through the forums. We're pretty helpful here so any questions, post them up and I'm sure someone will answer as best they can! Congrats on your stylish black purchase, looking pretty fine! If you're considering engine mods and you're concerned with fuel economy there's two ways to look at it;

    - NO it won't affect your economy because if you increase the air flow intake and exhaust, Intercooler etc, technically you're making your car more efficient I would say and rather should assist with your economy. I have a full exhaust on mine and the guy who fitted it wanted me to email him back results with fuel usage as he believed my car would run more efficiently.

    -YES, if you modify your car, it will sound and run great causing you to catch the MPS fever we all seem to have. Symptoms include a heavy foot, excessive boosting, AWD laucnches (FTW!!) this will all come back to bite you when you wish to fill the tank. Then again the good thing about the MPS, you can still have fun and click well over 400kms easy (not like some V8's)

    If you wish, check out the members ride section or alternatively I invite you to check out my thread on my ride, if you wish to see some examples of mods or ideas. If you have any questions on my ride on anyone else's that you're keen to do yourself, fire an email away or comment on their post. To view my MPS6 click on the "RR" link on the bottom below (signature)

    Hope you see a few things you like!

    Enjoy your ride!

    welcome to the forums!!!!

    nah, most MPS's can get better than 10L/100km's on the highway quite easily, city driving is a killer tho... ugh, i got 12L/100 on my last fill up, damn sydney traffic... but got high 9's on recent cruise, which involved a bit of enthusiastic driving an hour or so on the highway home (~300km's all up) thats an MPS3, figure it'll be similar for a MPS6, am sure one of the owners of a 6 can answer better for you!
    and as rogwick said, your fuel econ shouldnt be affected, whether or not you give it a bootfull it more post-mods is another thing entirely

    To elaborate a little on Sarcasticone's comments, the MPS3 is roughly 200kgs lighter, naturally a little better on fuel economy. But sarcasticone is bang on the money, its city driving that is the main cause of reduced economy. I drive in and out of Perth everyday, traffic is heavy, I have a little fun every now and then but for the most part I shift easy and do speed limits. Right now, I'm on 11.5L/100 but I've seen constants of 12.2L/100 when its a bad week (rainy, heavy traffic, crashes, road works etc)

    I've gone through the better part of a full tank on hwy and I was averaging high 8, low 9L/100. Keep in mind I was purposely driving easy to find out what the MPS could do. 6th gear, cruise control ~100kmph most of the way down south. By rights, the 60L tank should take you comfortably 550-600kms. Usually when I fill up my car calculates 530-580kms remaining anyhow. It's just my work lifestyle that never allows that.

    For some useless comparisons (all based on 98RON);
    2006 Mazda 6 MPS I've hit 550kms and still going
    2006 Mazda 6 Luxury Sport I hit 850kms to a tank...and still going
    1997 Kawasaki ZZR250 ~400kms, 14L tank
    2007 Honda CBR600RR 250-300kms on a 17L tank, fuel economy was worse than a Honda Jazz, a lot of fun though!

    With great power comes great fuel consumption...

    Onyx, I will deff keep an eye out for you on Harris street! I am surprised I have not spoted you before as when I was thinking of purchasing one I kept a sharp eye out for them on the roads and thought that they were as rare as hens teeth. And now I find there was one just down the road! You may see me on Harris or Miller streets over the next three weeks as after then we are moving to Kensington.

    Shakespeare, you have a very nice rear end! It deff looks great without the Mazda 6 badge and you have further inspired me to get rid of it. I assume that a hair dryer and some fishing line or dental floss will do the trick per a forum post on the subject. The black badges look great by the way but am not sure if black would suit my black car. The tinted rear lights may however and I may steal that idea!

    Rogwick, your list of mods is impressive! I am releaved that mods should not reduce my economy provided I don't keep the throttle wide open too much! However, I really like how quiet and refined the engine is and don't want to spoil that particularly as I expect to be doing quite a bit of highway driving. From looking through the forums it seams like the key mod to unlock the dormant potential in the engine is to replace the downpipe with one that allows easier breathing. If I just did that and kept the stock air filter and exhaust then do you think I would be adding much volume to the engine? I think the engine should still be relatively under-stressed and last a long time right?

    Seperate question, and this may not be the best forum to ask it, but my MPS pulls slightly to the left (ie. if you let go of the wheel it will turn left corners all by itself) so I had all the wheels re-alligned. However, that did not make any difference to the left hand bias. Has anyone else come accross this? I am thinking I will need to take it to a Mazda dealer and ask them to look into it.

    Thanks mate, I've done a fair bit so the list goes on a bit. The way I see it the mods you do enable the vehicle to achieve much more, easier. For example if the vehicle can breathe better, the greater the airflow is the greater it should perform. This in turn means you need not put your foot down as hard to achieve such a result. Kind of like drinking a thick milkshake through a thin straw, then upgrading to one of those fat straws KFC has with their interesting and flavoursome shakes, its much easier to get more num nums through the straw and into your mouth! I see the same with an air filter. The standard paper filter means more resistance (Pa) draw through the filter. The engine needs to work much harder to such in enough air to produce power. The way I see it anyway.

    The engine is quiet yes, however IMO the Luxury sport has a much more aggressive sound stock than the MPS. For me the MPS was a little too tame, I couldn't hear much at all. I've got a full exhaust including a DP, 3" mandrel bend mild steel pipework, into one resonator, another resonator and splitting via a "y" piece into two stainless super-cat mufflers. The result isn't loud as such, but quiet nice. Definitive note which holds right up to redline. It's not as loud as most exhausts, that's due to the two resonators. Drone is very minimal too, I think you would like it. With the intake it sounds nuts!

    Yep, you're right. Replacing the DP will give you a decent increase in flow and power. You will notice how chunky and restrictive the stock part is when you remove it. Another thing you will notice is the spool seems about 500RPM sooner and the power seems to hold up and beyond the high rev range. Stock exhaust and you will have NO power at about 5-5,500 RPM. If you wish to achieve more power, I would recommend a decent SRI or CAI, TIP, an exhaust (get rid of the "T" piece pipework in the rear) Mufflers are optional as the design is quite exceptional. Replacing mufflers will only give you a couple more ponies. But if you want the note, then by all means go ahead!

    If you modify just the DP, you will most likely get an increase in power, but its kind of like having abs of steel but fat legs and arms and expect to run fast! It helps but at the end of the day, holding you back. I would look into a better hi-flow intake system and getting rid of that existing "T"piece pipework exhaust. The engine is forged, you can push it a bit!! Should still last a long time no worries if looked after.

    Usually when vehicles pull to the left or right it is due to an alignment issue and can be re-adjusted at the mechanics or by mazda. If your car is still pulling to the left there is a chance your last mechanic could have got it wrong? Alignment comes down to the geometry steering set-up. It is possible they could have done something wrong. Quick question...if your car is pulling to the left, is the steering wheel completely straight? To a lesser extend, most LHD roads tend to slope from the middle downwards for rainfall to flow into the drains. There is a chance the road you're on could be misleading you to the left. Maybe try the same test in a large carpark or more of a flat surface. Or what I do, IF NO ONE IS COMING, go on the wrong side of the road and let go of the wheel and see which way you drift. If you fail all these tests, I would be taking your vehicle to a specialist place and getting a wheel alignment done. It's possible the previous owner could have hit a kerb at some point or something knocking it out.

    Apologies for the lengthy reply, took a few more words than expected to answer your comments. Hope that helps you out a little bit. If you are seeking mods, see what most 6 owners are doing with regards to intakes and exhaust and the likes. I would say most would opt for an intake and DP over anything else.

    Btw badge removal for ya...
