Default Gen II Stock Air Box - Any Mods possible?

Hi all, during dicussions with various members about possible mods to stock air boxes, I thought I'd open mine up and have a squiz.

I was after a quick mod while I wait for an SRI from MZR Performance.

I'm not sure of the configuration of the Gen I's but the Gen II seems to have a pretty decent intake through 2 grills on the top of the front bumper.

These 2 grills enter into a single pipe behind/above the radiator heading back to the air box.

I'd be interested to here if this is a different design to the Gen I. To me it seems the mods mentioned may not be applicable to the Gen II.

That mod isn't possible for the Gen 2.

You have a decent setup already.

That's what I was thinking. It's aready getting a good air supply from the front of the car, away from the engine bay. Although being only plastic, I wonder if heatsoak would warm the whole assembly.

The plastic won't retain heat, so isn't really an issue. Looks like they've improved the airflow to the airbox since the Gen 1.

hhmmm.... air induction on top of the radiator.... (from what I can tell).. that sounds good if you like in the arctic... but from a performance idea (from a standstill) im not sold on this setup

I found the difference between the CPE CAI and the stock airbox to be minimal on the gen 2. On the gen 1 I could feel a difference immediately, better response, more power. On the gen 2's its negligible.

    Hi all

Just wondering if its at all worth while installing something like an AEM pod filter (see http://mpsgarage.com.au/shop/product...ir-filter.html) inside the airbox.
Im looking to keep my warranty intact for the moment so was looking at the K&N stock replacment filter (see http://mpsgarage.com.au/shop/product...ir-filter.html) but after reading this thread (http://www.ozmpsclub.com/forum/intak...-any-good.html) it does not seem too great.
Just wondering if attaching the AEM pod inside the box would make much of a noticable difference and not void warranty, or if its just etter to wait a bit and get an SRI down the track when warranty's up.
Anyone done anything like this before or have any ideas?
    cheers

um.. how do you plan to put the pod in the box?

and if mazda open it up and find a pod filter wedged in there they are going to have the same view as if you just had an SRI.

IMO get an SRI enjoy the noise, swap it back when you need work done.

Had MZR SRI fitted to my gen2 just over a week ago and since have done close to 4,000km's (return drive to Brisbane from Cairns on weekend) and car did not miss a beat and sound when accelerating was awesome. Do not know if any more power but definitely feels more responsive and if this is the only mod I get then it is money well spent.

Thanks, I probably will do just that, get a CP-e SRI and take it off for warranty, or just wait a year or so.

I don't really know much about intakes.
I thought most of the warranty issues with SRI's involved things like non-mazda MAF housings, exposure to heat and possible moisture if not in a box, and different pipe diameters rather than simply using a different filter type. I'v seen a pod attached inside a factory box (cant remember where, it wasn't a mazda though), but it was probably a more complicated job which, as you say, would piss them off anyway.

    cheers
