May I suggest that this looks to me like a lightweight electric motor hybrid solution intended for use in regenerative braking and low-speed torque assistance, hence gearset. Perhaps something ultimately destined to be integrated with the disk brake assembly? This would provide most of the benefits of hybrid fuel savings in the circumstances it is needed most - stop start. Beyond that it would pale next to say prius and honda in terms of electrical systems capacity, but could be calibrated to smart launch assist in manuals, tying it to the clutch etc. Considering that it's best use as a lightweight solution is braking and launch torque assist, I could see it integrated into the smart idle start/stop technology with lightweight hybrid system.
In a sense as much a hybrid as the prius or honda, but you'd want to be close to the fuel station if you intended to get there on electric only. I doubt it would support electric only.
