    Camilleri Feeling a Little Deflated
    5/05/2010 at 1:53PM

A flat tyre during the first race of the third round of the Australian Manufacturers Championship at Phillip Island over the weekend has robbed Jake Camilleri and the Grand Prix Motorsport team of another top result with their Mazda 3 MPS.

Other than the tyre drama, the weekend was another flawless performance by the team, which is now all systems go with preparations for the upcoming Australian Six Hour at Eastern Creek on July 18.

The weekend started strongly for Camilleri, qualifying sixth outright and on the class C pole by over two seconds to the nearest competitor.

After a lightning compulsory pit stop in the first race, Camilleri was running strongly in second position behind eventual race winner Stuart Kostera late in the race, before a flat tyre half way around the 4.445km long circuit forced the car to limp back to the pits for a replacement.

The team had to settle for sixth at the conclusion of the hour long race.

Camilleri once again found himself in second position with only six laps to go in the second race, but a late race charge by the outright class cars dropped the Grand Prix Motorsport machine to fourth at the chequered flag, well within sight of the outright podium.

Tyre dramas were a common thread throughout the field, with many of the leading contenders suffering on the high speed circuit.

Despite the setback, Camilleri once again demonstrated the speed of his turbo charged machine.

"On Sunday we really had to manage our tyres well, and it was a good, well planned race," Camilleri said.

"The pace was flat out, it was pretty wild out there hanging on through some of the fast sweepers

"It's a bit disappointing about the tyre problem on Saturday, but I'm sure we'll bounce back at Eastern Creek.

"All credit must go to the Grand Prix Mazda team, they did an awesome job preparing the car, and their stops were spot on once again."

For team manager Graeme Murray, the first race issue makes the team all the more determined to bounce back at the Six Hour.

"It was such a shame that we had the tyre issue with six minutes to go in the first race, but otherwise we are very happy with the car, and it was another excellent showing by Jake and the team," Murray said.

"We learned a bit more about the car, and we are really looking forward to showing what we can do at the Six Hour.

"A class win there would definitely put us back in the championship chase."

Grand Prix Motorsport would like to thank Castrol, Esanda, All Star Tuning Systems, Allianz , HDR Workshop Solutuions, Mobile Flywheel Grinding, Top Cog Diff and Gearbox Centre and Mazda Australia for their continued support.
