Thread: Tyre Review Thread

  1. Default Tyre Review Thread

This poll has been designed to assist you in the purchase of new tyres for your MPS.

The listed tyres have been recommended in a separate thread and collated into this poll.

By voting for a tyre you are in fact recommending that tyre to the OzMPSclub community.

As this is a public poll you can see who has voted/recommended a specific tyre and ask them questions directly. To do this click on the number of votes for any tyre and all the people that have voted will be displayed.

In addition to the below reviews please see the responses in this thread and also the excellent survey responses collated on the TireRack website http://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyresults/index.jsp

The information below has been borrowed from a number of websites and looks like it is in fact the press releases for each tyre.

    Bridgestone Adrenalins

Own the street with Adrenalin Potenza RE001 high performance tyres. The foundation of high performance driving is high level stability. The Adrenalin Potenza RE001's broader ground contact area delivers more steering information from the tyres. With better straight line stability, front / rear balance and faithful rear tyre tracking, the result is greater control giving drivers more options in varying conditions.

    Falken AZENIS RT-615K

Today’s sports cars, compacts and performance sedans are extremely versatile. The tire they ride on has to be the same. The new AZENIS RT-615 offers a world spec construction, featuring an improved motorsports-grade cap compound that effectively maintains grip as tire temperatures increase. In addition, the special 8/32nd molded tread design reduces the new tire’s tread squirm while providing efficient mileage for street use. A solid center rib significantly reduces wheel spin by increasing the tire’s contact patch void ratio under heavy acceleration. Understanding the tremendous demands the AZENIS RT-615 will experience, new proprietary casing design, bead apex and turn-up technology allow for the elimination of heavy steel construction, resulting in an 8% reduction in unsprung tire weight.

In its category, the Azenis RT-615 performs well in wet conditions. 8/32 tread depth and optimized aqua tusk positioning, allows better tread adhesion as it delivers ample wet grip performance. Matched with three high void low turbulence grooves, consistent, and in some cases, increased, wet weather speeds can be achieved as potential hydroplaning tendencies are reduced.

The result: A tough, durable, street-sensible tire, whose 200/A/A UTQG rating, make it a great match for the autocross, time attack, or drift competition.

    Goodyear F1

The Eagle F1 Asymmetric is Goodyear's Max Performance Summer tire developed for modern high performance vehicles that are more advanced, intelligent and luxurious than ever before. However since these vehicles are also more powerful, faster and heavier, they require tires that can provide control without conceding comfort. The asymmetric in the Eagle F1 Asymmetric name describes both the tire's tread design and internal structure, both of which are designed to enhance performance in dry and wet conditions. Like all summer tires, the Eagle F1 Asymmetric is not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.

The tread uses Goodyear's Racing Compound Technology to combine carbon black for dry traction, silica for wet traction and a new generation of polymers to optimize tread stiffness. This compound is molded into an asymmetric tread design with wide, solid outboard shoulder blocks to increase cornering traction while a continuous center rib improves high speed stability and an open inboard tread pattern disperses water. Wide circumferential grooves also allow water to flow from between the tire footprint and road.

The internal structure of the Eagle F1 Asymmetric includes twin steel belts reinforced with three layers of spirally wrapped polyamide cord to enhance tread stability and high-speed capability. Goodyear Active Cornergrip Technology includes the addition of aramid reinforcement in the inboard sidewalls to provide a more even contact with the road for more even distribution of pressure across the whole contact patch when cornering.

    Kumho XS Ku36

The Ecsta XS (eXtreme Street) is Kumho’s Extreme Performance Summer tire developed for passionate driving enthusiasts looking to make the most of their vehicle’s capabilities in competition, at the track or on the street. The Ecsta XS is designed to deliver Kumho's ultimate level of dry road performance while maintaining wet traction. Like all summer tires, the Ecsta XS is not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.

The Ecsta XS molds Kumho's high-grip synthetic resin enhanced tread compound into an asymmetric pattern that features wide outboard shoulders to deliver dry road responsiveness and cornering, along with a continuous center rib that offers linear handling and high-speed stability. Two wide circumferential center grooves and an inboard network of aggressive lateral aqua grooves enhance wet capability. The tire's structure includes two high-tensile steel belts reinforced by spirally wound nylon to provide excellent strength, uniform ride quality and high-speed capability while the sidewalls are tuned to resist lateral deflection and to provide handling control and positive feedback.

    Michelin Pilot Sport 3

Original Equipment (O.E.) summer tires are an appropriate tire choice for sporty vehicles manufactured in the U.S., as well as those imported from Europe and Asia. Developed for use on new cars and light trucks, these tires provide a sporty blend of ride quality, noise comfort and handling, along with dry and wet traction. These tires are not intended to be driven in snow.

While Original Equipment summer tires are often repurchased as direct replacements for pairs and sets of worn out Original Equipment tires, they can also be used on other vehicles in axle pairs or sets of four if they match the needed tire size, load range and speed rating specifications, as well as the anticipated driving conditions.

While we attempt to provide a picture of as many of these tires as possible, the pictures used to represent these tires cannot be guaranteed to be an exact depiction of each tire's appearance because of the variety of subtle differences in tread designs and sidewall styling.

    Pirelli PZero Rossos

The PZero Rosso System includes both asymmetric and directional tread designs, each tuned to satisfy the unique performance needs of different types of vehicles and uses. The PZero Rosso Asimmetrico is the most widely used because it's designed for both front and rear axle positions of front engine front-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive cars (and on all cars driven on the track). The PZero Rosso Direzionale is designed to offer enhanced hydroplaning resistance and is primarily for use on the lighter load carrying front axle positions of mid-engine and rear-engine rear-wheel drive cars (which are then combined with the PZero Rosso Asimmetrico tires on the rear axle positions).

Both of the PZero Rosso tread patterns are elegant. The Asimmetrico tread pattern retains the "Zero concept" of earlier PZero tires by combining a semi-slick center rib that enhances driving precision while accelerating and braking with robust outer shoulder and intermediate tread blocks that are connected by circumferential "multi-ring" ribs to enhance dry grip. The independent blocks of the inner intermediate rib and inside shoulder are separated by wide grooves to help eject water to reduce hydroplaning and enhance wet grip. Considerable use has been made of curved grooves, which complement the circumferential grooves to reduce noise.

PZero Rosso tires use a silica-enhanced tread compound to provide better grip in low temperatures in the wet and lower rolling resistance in the dry. The tread is supported by PenTec (a material developed by Allied Signal for space exploration) cord which is used to reinforce lightweight steel belts and give more high-speed stability while reducing tire weight and temporary flatspotting when parked overnight.

While most Pirelli PZero Rosso tires wear a red "PZero" logo, selected sizes simply feature the "Rosso" logo as part of the embossed black sidewall styling along with the black letters.

    Sumitomo HTRZ-III

The HTR Z III (High Technology Radials-3rd generation) is Sumitomo's Max Performance Summer tire developed for sports cars, sporty coupes and high performance sedans. It is designed to showcase Sumitomo's technical resources by providing high-speed handling stability along with traction on dry and wet roads. Like all summer tires, it is not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.

The Sumitomo HTR Z III features a silica-enhanced tread compound molded into a sophisticated, 5-rib, asymmetric tread design. Large outboard shoulder and intermediate tread blocks along with continuous center and inboard intermediate ribs provide responsive handling, high-speed stability and dry road traction. The inside shoulder is linked by another continuous circumferential rib that enhances wear quality to help reduce noise throughout the life of the tire, especially on vehicles with independent suspensions and alignment settings that specify negative camber. Straight and wide circumferential grooves along with long, sweeping lateral grooves pump water from under the tire’s footprint to increase hydroplaning resistance and wet traction.

The Sumitomo HTR Z III radial features a high-rigidity construction consisting of wide steel belts reinforced by spirally wrapped polyamide that stabilize the tread area to enhance handling and high-speed capability. Its polyester cord body and hard rubber sidewall fillers help blend uniform ride quality with steering response and lateral stability.

    Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD08

The ADVAN Neova AD08 is Yokohama's Extreme Performance Summer tire developed for the drivers of sports cars, sports coupes and performance sedans that have a passion for sport driving. The ADVAN Neova AD08 is designed to provide high levels of traction, responsive handling and driving control on dry and wet roads, however it is not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.

The ADVAN Neova AD08 tread compound combines fine particle, Micro Silica (MS) with Hyper Density Carbon (HDC) to provide adhesion in damp and dry conditions. This compound is molded into a directional tread pattern that features twin circumferential center ribs and extra-wide Uniblock shoulders to increase cornering stability and steering response. Three large circumferential grooves and HydroArc Channels in the shoulders enhance wet traction. The tire's internal structure includes two wide steel belts reinforced by spirally wound nylon to provide strength and high-speed capability while the sidewalls are reinforced with steel cord inserts to resist lateral deflection and enhance control and cornering stability.

Like the motorsports tires this Extreme Performance street tire has evolved from, the ADVAN Neova AD08 radial's construction and compounds have been tuned to maximize the tire's traction and performance within a specific range of ambient temperatures. Therefore, unlike less highly-tuned tires, Yokohama's care instructions specify that due to its compound characteristics, ADVAN Neova tires must be used and stored at temperatures above -10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees Fahrenheit) to maintain its performance and avoid tire damage.

    Yokohama S.drive

The S.drive ("Sport drive") radial is Yokohama's Ultra High Performance Summer tire developed for the drivers of sports cars, sporty coupes and performance sedans. The S.drive radial is designed to use Yokohama's technological advancements to deliver extraordinary grip and handling on both wet and dry roads. Like all summer tires, the S.drive radial is not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.

The S.drive radial features Yokohama's micro-flexible tread compound developed using nanotechnology to produce a silica-based compound that maximizes contact between the tire and the road to enhanced grip in wet and dry conditions. This advanced compound is molded into a directional tread design that features independent shoulder blocks, notched intermediate ribs and a continuous center rib to maintain constant road contact and improve cornering stability. Wide circumferential grooves with angled groove walls optimize cornering traction and evacuate water to resist hydroplaning while groove-in-groove technology (tiny scores on the groove walls) distributes the stress loads to promote more even wear. The tire's internal structure includes twin steel belts reinforced by jointless nylon cap plies and belt edge strips to enhance ride uniformity and high-speed durability.

Wow, excellant colab of info. I think it would be good if people give specific feedback as to why they like the tyre. This is not meant as a discussion, just cold hard facts from owning the particular tyre.

I also nominate this to be stickied!

    Also its spelt Kumho :P

Likes: Ride quality, lower noise than RE050A's, braking performance, consistent performance through the life of the tyre (unlike RE050A's).
Dislikes: Time taken for tyres to settle/scrub in after fitting (1000-1500km), narrow tyre pressure window where they feel good (have to keep on top of your pressures running these, and run them higher than OEM, about 38-39F/36-37R seems to be the sweet spot for these on the 3 MPS), although lower noise than OEM they are still louder than a less agressive tread pattern would be.

Dislikes: Price is out of this world, the wear pattern was quite uneven due to the different compounds/patterns on the tyre surface. A bit noisy on the freeway.

Likes: Unbelievable grip in the wet and the dry, very quiet compared to the 2 sets of Bridgestones that preceded them. Very predictable tyre as there is *always* enough grip
Dislikes: They are not the cheapest tyres, but my biggest dislike is how hard it is to get them, there's a waiting list!
Wear: No idea, only had them on for just over a week. Though I wouldn't be surprised if they last quite well, as there is now no wheelspin in the wet.

Likes: Fantastic Grip in dry or wet, the more you push them, the better they feel. Unbelievably quiet. Very comfortable on rough roads (soaks up bumps well).
Dislikes: Slightly soft and vague feeling when you first point them into a corner.
Wear: Unknown as only got them today lol.

Likes: Great through water without aqua planing, through tight roundabouts at 70-80k's in the wet stuck well great straight line and cornering grip in all conditions, responsive, confident feel is OK still prefer my bridgestones and the Yokohama S-Drives I tested on Col's car.. For the price I NO complain. Absolutely great value for money for everyday driving.....
Dislikes: A little noisey but not to bad.
    Wear: Only done 1,500kms

When I get time around Mt Glorious I will give a report on the Haida.

Dislikes: Was never happy with them on my first trip to Mt Glorious. They were ok tyre for some hard driving but give up to quickly. In the wet they were average compared to the bridgestones.

*Edit* Should mention this time I went with the 45's rather than 40's for a better ride, though as my car is lowered I get a little scrubbing at the rear with a full car.
