Camilleri Claims Third in AMC Opener
10/04/2010 at 5:34PM
Jake Camilleri once again proved the outright speed of the Grand Prix Motorsport Mazda 3 MPS with a stunning third place in the opening race of the second round of the Australian Manufacturers Championship at Symmons Plains Raceway today.
Camilleri ran a clean race, leading the for ten laps in the early going, and a slick compulsory pit stop ensured the podium berth, an entire lap up on the fourth placed finisher.
The result mirrors the third place that the team achieved in the corresponding round at the circuit in 2008.
“It was a good clean race, and pretty straightforward really,” Camilleri said.
“We went with a slightly different setup to what was ideal, because we thought it was going to rain harder during the race.
“Everything went to plan; we had good race pace and an awesome pit stop, with what we have learned here today, I think it sets us up for a good run in the last race.”
Team manager Graeme Murray was once again pleased with the effort his crew put in throughout the weekend.
“Well, that’s one hour down, and we have another hour to go tomorrow,” Murray said.
“Jake did a fantastic job once again, he really looked after the brakes which are a telling factor around Symmons Plains with the long straights and slow corners, and his lap times were ultra consistent.
“While some of the other teams had issues, we stuck to our game plan, and our pit stop was spot on the money.
“We’ll check over the car tonight, but it looks very good on the track, and we hope to go a couple of positions better tomorrow.”
The second round of the championship concludes tomorrow with the final hour long race, which will once again feature a compulsory pit stop for a single tyre change.
Grand Prix Motorsport would like to thank Castrol, Esanda, All Star Tuning Systems, Allianz , HDR Workshop Solutuions, Mobile Flywheel Grinding, Top Cog Diff and Gearbox Centre and Mazda Motorsport for their continued support.

Kostera Takes Out Opening One Hour Race
11/04/2010 at 11:52AM
Team Mitsubishi Ralliart Australia’s Stuart Kostera scored an emphatic race one victory at Symmons Plains, Tasmania, in round two of the Peter Boylan Traffic Solutions Australian Manufacturers Championship for Production Cars.
While the Victorian Kostera battled Bathurst 12 Hour victor Gary Holt (NSW) in the early part, his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 10 team mate and pacesetter New Zealander Ian ‘Inky’ Tulloch was an early casualty with detonated engine.
No such dramas for the winner though as he covered 54 laps in the 60 minute event and finished around 50 seconds ahead of the Holt BMW 335i which had Tasmanian Greg Crick at the wheel at race’s end. Kostera also won Class A for High Performance All Wheel Drive Cars while the Holt/Crick combination secured Class B for High Performance Rear Wheel Drive vehicles.
Third and one lap down was Queenslander Jake Camilleri in his giant killing Mazda 3 MPS which took out Hot Hatches Class C from the similar Mazda of Hadrian Morall which was a further two laps behind and fourth outright.
Another “punching well above his weight” performer was the Class D Production Sports Renault Clia of Richard Gartner. The combination was fifth overall after a sterling class battle with Trevor Keene’s Mini Cooper S (seventh outright) and Lauren Gray (Toyota Corolla) while succumbed to brake problems and failed to compete 75 per cent of race distance.
Driver error by Allan Shephard who teamed with Kean Booker in his BMW 130i where Shephard gridded up in the wrong position cost the outfit dearly with and addition pit visit while the team’s other car driven by Peter O’Donnell was delayed with a engine coil gremlin. The cars finished sixth and eighth respectively.
A puncture and differential problems put Matt McGill’s Ford Falcon GT out of contention while Kurt Wimmer/Sam Walter fail to start due to a failed crank angle sensor failed after a late engine change. Former production champion Colin Osborne was also out of the action after a turbo blew in his Mazda during qualifying.
