    Armor All Bathurst 12 Hour

    Mount Panorama Bathurst, February 12-14

Despite enduring a frustrating Armor All Bathurst 12 Hour last weekend, the Grand Prix Motorsport Mazda 3 MPS team of Jake Camilleri and Scott Nicholas recorded their best ever finish in the event, and nearly cracked the magical outright top-ten.
The crew displayed stunning pace in the wet race, and at times were the fastest car on the circuit despite persistent braking dramas which held the crew back to an 11th place finish, and second in the STP Performance Car class.
For team manager Graeme Murray the result is somewhat bittersweet, with the outfit more than capable of a stronger result if it were not for the niggling issues.
"In the three years we have taken the Mazda 3 MPS to Bathurst, this is the strongest the car has ever been," said Murray.
"We spent a lot of time concentrating on the front of the car, and for some unknown reason the left-hand-front brake calliper was leaking air into the braking system throughout the day.
"During the race we had to make three or four extra pit stops, which just threw our strategy out the window, but Jake and Scott did an awesome job considering the problem and the conditions.
"There's not a scratch on the car, and they were right on the pace all weekend long; to race with only two drivers for the entire 12 hours in those conditions is really quite an achievement.
"I couldn't be happier with the guys on the team, they did a top job all weekend long.
"I think looking at the results sheet, the standard of the field was so much higher this year, which bodes well for the future of the event.
"Bring on the rest of the Championship, the six-hour at Eastern Creek and the 12 Hour next year, we can't wait!"
With the Bathurst 12 Hour also counting towards the Australian Manufacturers Championship, it puts Camilleri and the Grand Prix Motorsport crew in a strong position heading into the second round at Tasmania's Symmons Plains Raceway in April.
Grand Prix Motorsport would like to thank Castrol, Esanda, All Star Tuning Systems Allianz for their continued support.
    Driver Quotes
    Jake Camilleri
"It's almost a bit hard to take because it was so perfect in practice and qualifying, and the car had incredible pace throughout the race.
"In the wet we could get about an hour of running before we had to come in an bleed the brakes, and in the dry it was about half an hour.
"The safety cars saved us in some instances, but on the other hand it made it very hard to make up lost ground to the opposition.
"The team did an awesome job all weekend long, as did Scotty, and it's a shame that such a little problem, one that we have never seen before, cost us a top result."
    Scott Nicholas
"It was a lot of hard work with next to no brake pedal, but we had to keep on circulating until we could fix it up under the safety car.
"The car was a rocket in the wet and the dry, Jake was outstanding in the wet, his times were quicker than everyone.
"It just goes to show how everyone underestimates the Mazda 3 in the wet, the handling balance was just incredible.
"All credit must go to Graeme and the crew for building an outstanding race car, as it managed to finish ahead of a lot of well respected outfits."

Mazda3 MPS Tames Bathurst as New Generation Works Racing Car Takes Shape

    18/02/10

While the ex-works Mazda3 MPS racing cars of Osborne Motorsport and Grand Prix Mazda were busy moving mountains at last weekend’s Bathurst 12 Hour, Mazda Motorsport has been developing the company’s first-ever New Generation hot-hatch racer.
The previous-generation Mazda3 MPS’ racing pedigree has earned the turbocharged hatchback a list of motorsport achievements including three class wins at Targa Tasmania, and more recently a class win and two top ten finishes at the 12 Hour endurance race.
On its debut outing the Osborne Motorsport Mazda3 MPS driven by Hadrian Morrall and Trevor Keene finished 1st in the 12 Hour’s Performance class and 8th outright, while drivers Jake Camilleri and Scott Nicholas came a close 2nd in the same class and 10th outright in their Grand Prix Mazda3 MPS.
“The Mazda3 MPS is a hard-wearing, and competitive out of the box race car, that continues to prove its worth at gruelling endurance events like the 12 Hour and Targa Tasmania,” said Mazda Motorsport chief Allan Horsley.
The New Generation Mazda3 MPS was met with critical acclaim when it hit the Australian market in June last year sporting a total design overhaul and a series of engine and chassis improvements.
While Mazda Australia is yet to confirm what events the New Generation Mazda3 MPS racing car will campaign in 2010, Horsley says developing a racing version of the new model was a no-brainer.
“Given the improvements made to the New Generation model and the success of its predecessor, there is no doubt we’re going to have another competitive little car on our hands.”
Both former works racing cars, the Mazda3 MPS Bathurst cars battled for class glory amid a field littered with performance cars from rival marques Holden, Ford and BMW.
It was a bittersweet victory for Osborne Motorsport chief Colin Osborne, with his other Mazda3 MPS driven by himself and Mazda ace Rick Bates forced out of the big race with turbo issues.
“To finish on top of the podium on our debut run is just fantastic,” said Osborne. “To win our class and finish in the top ten with very little race testing under our belts is a fitting tribute to the incredible team who, over the last couple of months, have moved heaven and earth to prepare these cars.”
The team’s hard work paid off over the weekend, with the winning Mazda3 MPS having to pit only six times during the 12 hour race.
“We called every pit stop perfectly and on each occasion we were able to capitalise on the safety car, which ultimately led to a fairly significant advantage.
“The ultimate objective is to get the best result for the team, irrespective of which car gets it. We showed on the weekend that the Mazda3 MPS is fundamentally a superb car, which stands us in good stead for a fantastic season of racing.”
Grand Prix Mazda motorsport manager Graeme Murray hailed his team’s performance in the face of what turned out to be a challenging yet ultimately successful campaign.
“To finish second on the podium is a fantastic way to kick off the season,” said Murray. “We had a few niggling issues with our front Alcon brakes which basically forced us to throw our original pitting strategy out the window, but despite all of this the team pulled together and achieved an excellent result.”
