Auto lock

Hi I have recently purchased a new mazda 3 MPS, i was looking through the manual and it mentioned that there is a feature that auto locks the doors and boot when you walk away with the key, and it says that it needs to be enabled by mazda.


when i took the car back to the dealer for the 1000k check up they said they hadnt heard of it and couldnt work out how to do it,

has anyone got this feature enabled and is it something that i can do myself?

With the Gen I when you unlock the car, if you havent opened the doors within 30 seconds the car will lock itself back.

My loan car at the moment is an i30 which locks the doors once you reach 30km/h I think. Very odd, but useful for the guys in FNQ from the stories I heard.

the way i understood the manual is that if you are driving, then turn off the car and jump out and forget to lock the doors it automatically locks after 5 seconds of not being able to detect the key in range of the vehicle....

i think it is very handy just need to be able to find someone that can enable it... seeing that not many ppl including the mazda dealership havent heard of it.....

i can even scan the page out of the user manual and post that to make sure that i am understanding it correctly....

i will be taking the manual down to the dealership next time i go in to show them..

this is for the 2010 mazda 3 but according the mazda3 mps 2009 manual it has the same thing... again its something for mazda dealer to do so i will bring it up with them..

Some cars have auto-lock when you drive off. I wouldn't worry about it. I hate nanny devices like this. Humans have a brain to decide if they want doors locked or not. Ditto auto-headlights and auto-wipers.

Stupidest ideas out. I have yet to use one that is 100% right all the time. Lights come on too early or not at all when it would be nice to have them, so you have to manually operate them anyway (the Ford XR6 setup is horrible). Wipers scrub dry screens, and so on.

I never lock doors when driving. I'm not in Jo'burg! So far I've never had anyone want to get in while the car is moving and I've seen too many door locks jam shut in accidents so you can't get out.

Many cars, including Mazda, (and even my 15 y.o Landcruiser) have an "auto-relock" function that re-locks the car if you haven't opened the drivers door in about 40 seconds after activating the remote-unlocking key fob. This is to take care of the fact that the signal emitted by a key fob can inadvertently unlock nearby cars as well as the car it is intended to open. Those cars so equipped simply then re-lock themselves. That is a good idea as it deals with an issue a human can't deal with, unlike those stupid concepts referred to above..

I also came across this while reading the manual and I want to activate it. Jump out and walk off having the car auto lock I think is a great feature, if only as a failsafe in case you forget to lock.

I also interpreted the function to be as you described, being that it locks the car when the key is not detected for a few seconds (this is different from the auto-relock if a door is not opened after uncloking).
The manual says that this function is disabled by default but can be enabled by an authorised Mazda Dealer.

My MPS3 is going in for its 1000k service on Monday so I will ask them and let you know how I go.

Got this feature enabled today at the dealer and it works great. Took me spelling it out to them (literally) and showing them in the manual what I wanted and twice hooked up to the computer for them to find it ... But they got there in the end.

Once you take the key out of range it beeps --- 3 secs -- beep beep-Locked

Sweet, I just paid a deposit for my new car yesterday.

Ill ask them to enable this before I pick it up, it puzzles me as to why it is not on by default? That feature just makes sense to me. And I am the type that absolutely hates auto wipers and headlights.

Thinking more about it, its probably off by default because it would get annoying when going back and forth from the car beinging home shopping or similar situations? It's still a good failsafe to have.

Doesnt the manual say that walking within the detection zone unlocks the vehicle too?

I asked the dealer at the 1000k check to do this and was told that it was not possible, I left because I didnt have time, but will get it done at the 10000km. Its amazing how the customer these days knows more than the so called specialists.

That's the same for all cars built in South Africa. When we were over there for a holiday, we noticed this. It would auto lock as soon as you started to drive. It's an anti-car jacking feature, which happens a lot in South Africa.

For the guys that got this feature enabled do any of you have the 2009 mps? And which dealer enabled it for you?

The 2007 Neo i have locks within 30sec ( like 10-20secs) but the 2006 MPS is a lot slower more like 30secs
