Thread: Why did you buy a 6 MPS?

  1. #1

Default Why did you buy a 6 MPS?

Just curious, what makes you buy the Mazda 6 MPS over the Evo or Sti? I do not own any of those cars, I drive a humble 95 Honda Accord VTi. Now it's time for something more powerful and exciting. But I am undecided over my next upgrade. At first I was thinking of getting either the Evo 8 or Sti but then later I find that they are just Lancers and Imprezas afterall, albeit much quicker. The interior is cheap and there are just too many posers showing off in these cars on the street.

I want something more classy, comfortable and yet fun to drive. Something that I can use as my daily and enough room to carry some mates to the pub every so often. So the 6 MPS seems to slot in perfectly. But I often read that the 6 MPS is something like a grown up version of the Evo or Sti for grown ups. I am in my mid 20s, should I stay away from the MPS go back to the more youthful Evos or STis?

I also enjoy road trips. The rally cars are quick on the track but for eating up the miles, I am quite doubtful. So again the 6 MPS looks like a pretty good grand tourer as well.

    Hmm.. decisions decisions decisions...

So what did you buy the 6 MPS over the Evos or Sti?

For me the Evo's and Sti's didn't enter the radar, mainly for as you mentioned above and I believe there are way too many WRX's STI's on the streets of Perth, the MPS 6 struck me as something a little bit more up market than the EVO/STI and also a much better proposition to carry family/mates/clients etc around in. My choices actually were around a Liberty GT/STI, MPS 6, MPS 3 and RX-8. In the end the overall package of the MPS 6 did it for me and Mazda offered a better trade on my SP23 than Subaru were going to

"Discretion is the better part of valour"

Actually it all started with my mates first car back in '91 - a 1986 Mazda 626 Coupe in dark blue with the adjustable sports suspension, cruise, power windows and mirrors, digital dash, full console stereo, 15" polished alloys in dark blue. We with our lowly Vauxhall Vivas, Austin 1100s and Daihatsu Charades didn't stand a chance! We all thought it was so cool! (See pics)
After that, 13 years later when back in NZ on holiday I rented a then new Mazda 6 dark blue sedan. Thought it was fantastic! The only thing i didn't find so attractive was the silver finish on the centre console which looked rat shit in a rental (scratched and pitted).
Fast forward a few years and I purchased a Lux Sport 6 but always wanted the MPS. Bought the MPS on a whim earlier this year from Adelaide and drove it back to Perth with a mate. Best fun I've had in a long time!

heres a good read for you albeit some posts are talking about the half MPS

I previously had a 2.5l Impreza RS, the torque was fantastic but it needed a bit more power so I was looking at moving up to WRX as I wasn't a liberty fan due to the styling.

I wanted AWD coming from a subi there was no question of a FWD car. The Evo's never floated my boat

Once I drove the MPS6 though and felt how a car could be refined and classy at the same time as making me grin from ear to ear I was sold. It is extremely comfortable on long trips for both myself and passengers and a bucket of fun whenever and wherever u want to push it. Definately best bang for your buck with a dose of refinement and luxury thrown in

Having just completed over 5000kms in 2 weeks on an interstate trip, I couldn't be happier with my 6. Loaded with 2 adults, 2 teens, and accompanying luggage (and believe me, she was FULL...) the MPS performed faultlessly (touch wood !). Most of the trip was on roads shared with trucks (B-doubles and triples) which meant overtaking manouvres were common. I had expected to notice a significant drop in performance due to our heavy load, but was more than impressed with acceleration in 3rd, 4th and 5th to get around these rigs. The torque available was terrific. The ability to throw the MPS back to 5th at 100kmh and feel the torque effortlessly pull the car quickly and SAFELY around the trucks was fabulous . Roll-on acceleration in higher gears in these cars is simply astonishing. Fuel economy averaged 9.5. Very impressed .

My reason, apart from the styling really appealing to me; you get a similar level of AWD performance to an STi/EVO, in a better equipped and more refined package. The Subaru and Mitsubishi are after all bottom of the range cars with some go-faster bits bolted on. The MPS6 makes these tarted-up shopping trolleys look incredibly, unbelievably, outrageously over priced. Besides that, under brakes the MPS6 will leave the Brembo equipped rivals looking impotent.

Im also younger at 21 years old. I came from a MY00 WRX to a 6MPS.
Reason - It fitted the 'quick' bill aswell as being unique and comfortable everyday for us (me and my wife)

Hoenstly, i really really really miss my wrx, S14 etc etc these kinds of cars. i still havent grow up as such and still would like an STI or EVO. But when the wife or kids, long trips and comfort\equipment come into it....

Then i could not find a better car for the money than a 6 MPS!

The cars i would consdier swapping for my MPS would be things like a R34 GTR, V35 350GT, EVO 9 or 10 etc etc.... These cars are all WAY over the money of a MPS...

The reason why i compare it to these cars...?
The MPS has very 'new' styling and interior design compared to most 2005+ cars out there for that price range.

Perhaps a 32 GTR..? No, the reason why? Interior design is getting on, doesn't have a trip computer, sunroof, 6 speed, cruise control etc etc etc.

Why not a R34 GT-T? Again, doesnt have the creature comforts the MPS has and isnt as quick stock and 6cyl rego lol

A 6,7,8 EVO? I would be fine driving it day in day out but if we wanted to take the car out on the weekend\trips etc then i KNOW my wife would usually just say lets take the Outlander as its easier and more comfortable!

True, chuck a STI, EVO into a corner and it feels so much more composed but if your needing to grow up and still want to have a bit of fun and smash the odd SS off the lights.... a 6MPS will have them taking a second look

Then again, Take a look at some of the US Mazdaspeed6's! Far from grown up!

Because I couldn't afford a brand new Subaru Liberty GT at the time......

I had a 06 Accord Euro Luxury, loved it to bits, till the day I wrote the poor girl off, always called it the red devil, guess it was never meant to be. Whilst I loved it, I wanted more power and have always been a fan of the Liberty's. However as it was 10k above my budget, I had to at the time "settle" for something else.

Hence I looked at the MPS 6, and to be quite honest when I found out they weren't going to be making them any more, I wanted one more. Didn't even test drive one, just knew I wanted one after Jeremy Clarkson said "I've driven 100,000 pound coupe's that are less fun than this"! I got a November 07 build, picked it up in December 07, it's been bliss ever since "knock on wood", and I am glad I didn't get the Subey! Things happen for a reason, I was shown the light! Two years on, I honestly can't see myself selling it in the near future, as there is no other car on the market, in my price range that tickles my fancy. Maybe if Mazda brought out a new MPS 6, then I'll be on board, but that's not going to happen.

I wouldn't compare the MPS 6 to an EVO or STI Rexy, for the simple matter that to me it's more of a GT car. Two separate markets. Those to me are more hardcore, the MPS 6 is more refined and civilised, simple as that!~

  9. Default stepping from WRX to MPS 6

Hey i'm new to this thread.....

I own 02 WRX but was thinking to jump on to 6 MPS instead of spending too much for Liberty GT. How can you help me with your experiences so far with your 6 MPS. I main reason i'm interested in 6 MPS is because of the Luxury sexy features, WRX are good on performance wise but I hate the cheap crappy interior even though EVOs......I dont want to get the latest MY10 or MY11 WRX, they look alright from outside but inside they still the same cheap plastic interior works.....

Well, If you could help me with your opinion and overall experiences pros cons that would be highly appreciated.....

    Cheers

    hey.

Could someone help me with your opinion over WRX.

I own 02 WRX buggy, I was thinking to get a 6 MPS because of its sexy luxury features over WRX & EVOs.

If someone could help me with the pros and cons then that would be grateful.

More space with the 6mps. The wrx and evos might be faster and lighter stock, but, give your 6mps a good tune and you'll eat them alive.

"I want something more classy, comfortable and yet fun to drive. Something that I can use as my daily and enough room to carry some mates to the pub every so often."
Is exactly why i got the 6mps. Felt alot more classy and comfortable than the falcon xr6 turbo, commodore SS, evo or wrx. The liberty gt was a good contender but i wasn't feeling the hoodscoop.
Didn't get the 3mps because i love ass. If the 3mps came out in a sedan i'd consider it.

If you want attention then the 6mps is not the way to go. Hardly anyone knows what it is. If you want to overtake someone who's trying to push you off the road and see their stunned face because they don't know what hit them, then take the 6mps!

I'm only 23, i've got the leather pack and some pillows in the back...there's back seat space, nothing grandpa about that!

When I was looking at cars I shortlisted the WRX, 6MPS and Liberty. I really wanted a car that could do all the things I wanted it to, so it needed to be fast, fit passengers in the back comfortably, have a decent boot and be comfortable for me to drive (as other 6 foot plus members with long legs know this isn't always easy). With my budget it looked like I could get a bugeyed STI (I spent more time looking into how to fix those god awful headlights than anything else on that car) because I heard the words glass and gearbox used too often in a sentence about the WRX. Eventually I decided that any car I hated the front of so much was not a good idea to buy.
This left me with the Liberty and 6MPS with the liberty harder to find in manual, and less powerful in auto. These two cars also won out due to there mixed nature, the mix of luxury with speed meaning they are less likely to be the kind of car to shake my teeth out on a long drive. I made my final decision with a single test drive in a B4 Liberty.... I didn't fit. After that I just test drove a whole bunch of the 6 till I found one that seemed in perfect condition and was the right price.

Also before the 3 members kick up a stink I couldn't afford a 3 MPS. The only car in Vic within my budget had a strictly no test drive until deposit paid rule....

I don't think any 3 drivers would kick up a stink mate. Maybe if you had have bought the bug-eyed STI.....(I agree, never liked the look of that model)

Tell me about it... I have a similar issue, 6 foot 2 but relatively short legs... The 6MPS is the first car I have found with a sunroof that I can drive comfortably... Most modern Japanese cars have more legroom than I can use, but are short on the headroom.

And I don't even bother looking at convertibles anymore... In an MR-2 the top of the windscreen is at mid-forehead height, similar in an MX-5.

as of today an ex owner of a mps6 (guy put a depoait today) brought it after owning a rx8.. in my opinion you cant compare a sti & evo to a mps6.. the overrall creature comforts , ease of everyday use and quality of the mazda inside and out was some of the reasons i chose the mps..

I was 29 when i brought it i think its a much classier stealth machine than the sti or evo which i think suit the younger age group.. as the young guy that brought mine said if you where going to mod a rex or evo and track it than its perfect.. hard to live with everyday..

i need an auto car so the wife can drive it so unfortunatly the mps3 gen 2 is out of the picture i think a mkv gti will hopefully soften the blow !

easy decision for me...ive wanted the MPS6 since it first came out.
its not a drag racing car...more a GT cruiser. its got lots of torque and traction and great for long cruises.

its not like the WRX/EVOs, which keep getting supersceded but newer models (and horrible exterior designs).
it looks only very subtley upgraded but just enough to distinguish it from the the mazda luxury sport...but is in another class of its own...and wont attact attention from the police.

and its just a nice car to drive...more so in the wet...with the traction control off and on long curves.

its not a car that would suit a driver that likes -

    a) reving every gear to redline (ie honda drivers)
    b) rev up and launch from standstill (ie most jap drivers)
    c) do burnouts (holden/ford)

more so the mature driver that has the mentality of..."i can go fast and have controlled fun...if i want to"
and its not a car that screams "look at me, look at me...im a douche with a doof doof subwoofas, a tower rack and cake fart cannon exhaust"
    more so..."look at me...im gone"

Coming from 2 Euro cars before my Mazda the change over was easy!!!

The build, the drive, the creature comforts all as good as the 2 Audi a4's I owned beforehand!!! Steathly performance and AWD made me want it!!!

Since jumping in vie never looked back…………Just a pity they don't make them anymore………So in years to come when it comes time to change over cars again……..its sad to know I wont be able to get in another one

Rogwick's boring story...grab a coffee or scroll down lol

I decided an upgrade of my first car Nissan Pulsar and purchased a 06 Mazda 6 Luxury Sport. Got a reasonable deal on it and loved it.

My circumstances changed within the year and I found myself in a position to buy a limited edition super-bike (Honda 600RR Ten Kate - Hannspree) A couple of months and I slipped on sand one night at around 50kmph and slid the bike into a parked car (mates company lancer) Didn't have any gear on at the time so experienced well over 250kg (total) impact (myself including bike) not to mention the force of moving forward on my left knee. A week off work, tablets, blood, pain etc later and I was fine and thinking bikes again. Although it took me a few weeks to walk right.

I took it upon myself to make the unusual "wise" decision to put a hold on motorcycles (still owned a 250cc so wasn't a complete hold) and give my knee a chance to fully heal. It was from the payout from the bike I decided that I would pursue the dream of owning a Turbo-charged vehicle. I'm pretty hands on with all my vehicles so it was an easy decision really.

Since I owned the 06 Luxury 6, the choice was easy...I want the same, just more power, more traction!

I don't mind REX's, EVO's and SkYRINE's, but they're fairly common (to both owners and police) and to be honest, pretty basic. Sure they're quick but I appreciate a bit of style too. I wanted a nice daily, something that is visually appealing, reliable and fun to drive. I want to walk away from my car, stop, turn around and smile, and I do.

I purchased my car stock and anyone that knows me...you'll find me working on my car over the weekend. I like the aspect of making a unique car, something different. It turns heads daily but I didn't modify it for that, more for myself. Keeping me out of trouble and having pride and passion. I won't list a big story of modifications (if you wish check out my RR thread for that)

The thing I like about the MPS is the design. It has an aggressive look to it, yet its still a Mazda. It's not over the top and there's actually a reason for the bonnet bulge. I like the fact that not many folks know anything about it...such examples include (with answers)
    "They're a 6 cylinder right?" First, are you a boy or a girl, I can't tell?
"Oi mate...what are they running?" Straight 6 cylinder (hehehe)
"Dude, how much power has that got" About half of what your SS has, catch me?
"What model Holden is that?" Go stand over there, nope, further, a little more..that's right, now stay there and be useless on your own
Are they FWD? I don't know, lets both take that corner in the wet at the same speed and find out

Not really sure what else to say, basically I bought the car I wanted, modified it the way I like it. Some folks like it some don't, its a great car, I'm happy...Let's all go for ice-cream.
