Thread: Best tyres for 3MPS's

  1. Default

Just went and got my regular 5000km alignment and balance done to be told my rear Michelin Pilot Sports need replacing. Asked for new tyre prices in 225/40/18 which Ive got. My Maragoni Mythos I have on the front I got for $260 20 mths ago are now $350/tyre. Michelin PP2's $570 Pilot Sports $650.

I asked about 235/40/18 which I want to go to as my cars not lowered, so should be fine, may have to get rears rolled slightly. The guy at Jax told me 235/40/18 is the 6th most common tyre size sold hence the price difference.

    Michelin PP2's $270 each

So I will be getting a full set incl spare very very soon BTW Im running 18x8 +45 rims
Taken my boring, bland, lame Subaru and my fat ass and driven off into the sunset with a smile on my face

    Default Sumitomo HTRZ-III wear

I'm now 20,000K on a set of Sumitomo HTRZ-III; really happy with the wear pattern.

Stock bridgies lasted 28,000K and were completely shagged by the end of it.

As a direct comparison, the wear on the sumitomo's at 20,000K is comparable to the wear the bridgies showed at 7,500K. Huge difference in wear, and the street handling's great. Much the same treatment; on track for 38 to 45,000K from them. Will be interesting to see how they progress as they go through second half life.

yea i cant vouch for wear as they haven't been on long.. but grip of the Sumitomos HTRz III's are very good. I was worried about the wet with them a little as i had read some so so things but it has been raining the last 3 days up here and i am safe to say i haven't once felt any slipping in a corner at all.. no real spirited driving though as you shouldn't be so stupid in wet ... but yea.

Dry is unreal though... just points n shoots...

Went looking at tyre prices today, thought I'd give an update. price sources were various tyre places around the Centenary suburbs of Brisbane (Jindalee, Mt Ommaney, Sinnamon Park etc)

    Yokohama Advan Sport V103
    215/45/18 $385 (this place wouldn't even consider putting a 225 on)

Bridgestone Potenza RE050A (our original equipment tyre)
    215/45/18 - $518
    225/45/18 - $529

    Bridgestone RE001 Adrenalin
    225/45/18 - $426

    Dunlop SP Sport 01
    225/45/18 - $300

    Dunlop Direzza DZ101
    225/45/18 - $238

    Maxxis (forgot the model numbers)
    225/45/18 - $330 or $300

Last place I went to checked the specs when I asked about 225/45/18 and it's only an 8mm rolling diameter increase (659mm vs. 651mm). New standards say the replacement tyre has to be within +15mm and -26mm difference in rolling diameter. Of course with the correct load and speed rating.

wooo, you're on the expensive side of town. Check out Bridgestone in Wynnum Central. I got 225/40/18 Bridgestone Adrenalins for $345 a quarter. $426 is excessive!

    Heyski Wardski!

The guy behind the desk at the tyre joint who quoted that reckons the relative value of the Aussie $ has pushed the prices up...and there are 14 Adrenalins in that size available in the warehouse Last fortnight when I asked there were 60...so they go through a few!

Wow, up by >$100 a quarter... cant be true??

Hey mate give Wynnum Bridgestone a call on 3396 9011. They've consistantly been cheaper than the rest.

What sort of life are you getting out of the KU36's?

I stumbled across a place where I can get 225/45/18 KU36 for $235 a corner and am seriously considering throwing a set on at that price, even if they wear out quickly...

Ended up passing on the KU36, look like an awesome tyre, I just need something that will last a little longer. Hopefully Jeev will give us another of his excellent reviews on these as he has just purchased them.

I'd decided on the Sumitomo HTR ZIII at $265 each but none were available so I ended up booking myself in for Thursday to get a set of these:

    Falken FK452 @ $278 per tyre 225/45/18

Was very happy to grab these, haven't heard anything but good things about them. Will report on performance after the mould release wears off in 500km or so.

Dan mate, great tyres these, but I've heard a little noisy on the Gold Coast freeway (the concrete part). Also, watch out for large bumps, or changes in grade with the 45's, at 225 wide they "may" rub your guards with that extra width and diameter..

Other than that, they'll do you all goodly mate. The extra width is great for cornering!

Ok... I have to ask. Why are people calling tyres the likes of RT-615 and KU36 "Semi Slicks"?

    You're making Baby Jesus cry.

Um... They're sticky. Really sticky, but unfortunately It's been too long since I had the RT-615s and I can't give a direct comparison

I'm very curious on the wear rate of the ku36's, on another note, has anyone ran a set of toyo R1R's?
