Thread: How much power is at the wheels?

  1. Default

I have been wondering about this question too as I felt my MPS was slowing down somehow ! Anyways got it dynoed about 2 weeks ago... was putting out 153KW at the wheels in 4th gear. Only mod being a CPE CAI. IS this normal ? would u guys say this is on the low or high side for an MPS ?

    Thanks

i would take it all with a grain of salt.

Every dyno reads different. you should find a dyno operator you like. Run your car stock, then when you mod it, run it again.

some xr5's have put 100kw atw on a diff dyno when others read 140+.

if you think your car is not making enough power....get another mps3 to do some side by side road test in 3rd gear or above. If one pulls HARD (more than one car length in one gear) away from the other. you may have a problem.

Peak Power output is for talking, torque is for winning.

Thats what actually did happen. The first owner of the car dynod the car when it was fairly new and stock. got approx 155KW at the wheels. I now have the car with 30K on the clock and a CPE CAI and with the same dyno ran 153 KW at the wheels.... how do I explain that lol I know the ECU will detune any gains from the CAI but it shouldnt really go backwards 2 KW would it ? I should also mention tyre pressure was identical and air temp was alsmot the same approx 1 deg difference. Also I been feeling that I get no torque steer from the car and it doesnt wheel spin in 2nd anymore like it used to. Could it be that mazda did something at the 30K serivce to the ECU to give a more linear power delivery hence this effect I'm getting ? I post up some dyno charts if that will help

get your car serviced before a run....maybe service it more regularly

some cars will lose power over time.

take it to a dyno that can replicate conditions accurately.

if your in syd try tunehouse. They basically have a wind tunnel that can replicate humidity aswell.

2kw loss is nothing to worry about....

Perhaps you're becoming too familiar with it pilot? Time for another power mod?

153 is a good figure. Mine and a few others have pulled 140 stock. But bear in mind that power is a largely meaningless value. Power cannot be directly measured because it's really only a mathematically derived description of an ability to do work. A dyno measures torque and uses the following formula to infer power.

    Power = Torque x RPM
    5252

You can see from the formula that one way to increase power is to increase torque, the other way is to increase rpm. You can't really do both at the same time, but that's another story.

I prefer the neck bending physical force of high torque and the effortless low-rpm driving style that goes with it. Some companies, like Honda for example, prefer the high-rpm approach to derive impressively high power numbers despite not having enough grunt to pull the foreskin off a leper.

I'm sure there would be a lot less confusion and conjecture if we used 'weight shifted horsepower' to measure work done instead of dyno's to measure a somewhat fictitious 'ability to do work'.

The best way to measure a change in the performance of your car is the quarter mile MPH (the ET is irrelevant in this case).

Thanks for all the reply guys. I probably am just getting used to the power of the car and putting 225 tyres on probably helped with the wheel spin in second as well. I know this is gonna sound nuts but I want my torque steer and wheel spin backkkkk lol the car felt like a monster.

mr nasa... what chip u in ur car and what mods to go along with it ?

I'm waiting for the EZY-flash from chiptorque to be released but I have a feeling I could be waiting forever

Jees a fair bit of boost u got dialed in there ! hows ur engine holding up ? and how is all this effecting ur warrenty ? I'm in 2 mind over go Xede now or wait possibly forever for the EZY flash.
btw I got 225X45 on my stock rims as 225X40 were illigal I was told on a 7.0" rim . Speedo seems fairly accurate with that setup but thats only comparing to my tomtom GPS lol
