Thread: MPS gearboxes

    Default MPS gearboxes

Just have a question in relation to the 6spds.
How sturdy are they? I have heard alot of bad things about corrolla sportivo and IS200 6 spds being a problem area an are always blowing up and was just wondering if MPS's have the same issues?

    Thankssss

There are some of use who would say that our gearboxes are a bucket of bolts, but this is probably down to the set-up of the shifter and oil type used from the factory. Those that have changed the oil and added a short shifter mod seem to find it shifts much nicer. Me I've got used to it now (I still miss a gear occassionally if I'm being lazy)

Reliability, Only from what I've read but have not heard of gearboxes going boom! They are manufactured for Mazda by gearbox specialists Aisin who make some very good gear and supply some major European brands (VW Audi etc) The design is a compact three shaft so it means that it's quite a compact lightweight box for a 6 speeder. Some of the more technical ones here may correct me or add some more info, but I think that's it in a nutshell - Good Reliable Gearbox, not so good shift quality (which you can get used to) and something that hasn't been known to fail!

btw moved this to general tech talk as it's more suited for that forum

Also be mindful of the links that Lynchy posted that these instances of Blown Engines occured after the engines were substantially modified from stock!

so when i get my mps, you recommend changing the gearbox oil and possibly convert to short shifter?

any good types of oil you recommend?

Couple of threads here with some info, browse through some of the Tech threads too for more info on Gearboxes, some guys here have also changed the rear engine mount which has helped with shifting but you do tend to get some engine vibration in the cabin. As I said earlier I've got used to mine and from memory was similar to the shift feel in the 3 MPS so it's not too bad. Penrite Syn 75W-90 is what most seem to recommend!
    Hope this helps

changed the rear engine mount to a new factory one or aftermarket? (if there is such thing available) and this cabin vibration you speak of, is that after they have changed the engine mount? pardon my stupidity lol

get a new aftermarket Rear engine mount like CPE from MPS garage does give in creased cabin vibrations but puts heaps more power to ground IMO and you wont miss your 2nd to 3rd shifts when your killing rex's

From what I've read, the TWM shifters don't fit the RHD MPS 6.
Please correct me if this is wrong.

A short shifter + bushings is not going to change the feel of the shifts and the way it slots in, as those are determined by the gearbox itself. Unfortunately there's not much you can do to change the shifting in our cars, but on the plus side, I have not heard of anyone destroying their gearbox yet (may be because we haven't got any seriously high powered cars).

Try looking at this thread if you're having issues sliding into gear: http://www.ozmpsclub.com/forum/how-t...d-friends.html

It does improve the shift quality and reduces (but not eliminates) the number of missed gears. Not significantly, but more than enough to make it worth the money and effort.

For example with the stock shifter I used to have to clunk through each of the three syncro's to reach first, and even then it wouldn't always go in. Now it's a single clunk.

It's true the TWM doesn't fit RHD, but if you're handy with tools it can be made to fit.

It may just be on certain cars, but I didn't have the clunks when shifting in mine and the TWM bushings I installed didn't produce much detectable difference in my car. Definately no improvement in shift quality for me.
