Mercedes-Benz and AMG have announced the development of an all-electric version of the SLS. The four motors are mounted near the wheels but not actually on them, giving a substantial reduction in unsprung weight compared with a wheel-hub motor set-up, and their combined output is 526bhp.

The 6.3-litre V8 SLS AMG (pictured) on which the prototype is based has a maximum output of 571bhp, but despite its apparent disadvantage the electric car has a similar 0-62mph time of around four seconds.

The problem is to ensure that the car will be able to perform at this level for a decent amount of time before the batteries run out of juice, and it is being looked into by a company called Deutsche Accumotive - a joint venture between Daimler and Evonik Industries - which has been created to develop and produce more efficient batteries in the future.
