Thread: Shop recommendations for rebuild?

    Default Shop recommendations for rebuild?

Hi all, I've done a bit of a search on this, but a lot of the threads are pretty old so thought I'd throw it out there instead.

After umming and ahhing about buying a new car recently, I've decided that due to a lack of suitable manual alternatives (i30n sedan was about all that interested me) and the fact that I still love my 6MPS, I'm going to 'rebuild' my MPS instead.

The car is basically bog stock, 196K on the clock with original engine, clutch, driveline etc. The timing gear was done a couple of years ago so it's not quite dead but it's blowing a bit of smoke now (likely turbo) so not far away from needing some loving. I've only just got it back from repainting so that kind of swayed my mind more on keeping it.

Anyway, I'm looking at engine rebuild with mild mods (I've read forged internals are a given if going to the expense of rebuild) such as CAI, DP, tune etc. Nothing crazy as it's my daily driver (not even interested in full exhaust). Plus new turbo, clutch, all mounts and ancillaries etc.

Budget will likely be around the $20-$25K mark (about a third of the cost of a new car) which 'should' be enough looking at online pricing for bits and pieces. Living in Cairns however, there's not a single shop up here that I would trust to send it to, so I'm looking at some reputable shops down south (I'm prepared to send the car probably as far as Sydney) that anyone might recommend for me to contact to run through what I'm likely going to be after/need. I'm not after the cheapest or the gurus that charge the earth - just looking for someone who does a good job and won't feel the need to ream me on price. I've googled options but wanting to hear from members who would actually recommend someone based on work done to their own car or someone they know is reputable based on positive feedback.

    Thanks in advance. N.

A little bit North of Sydney @MPS2NV Mitch at https://2nvindustries.com.au/ , specialises in these cars. Also owns a 6 himself. Face book page has heaps of pics of his work https://www.facebook.com/2NVindustries/

He built my engine 7 years ago and does all the parts fitting and backs his work. Considering the car has been running 500 to 650hp as a daily during the last 7 years and still runs flawless.

Doing a forged engine isn't cheap as these engines age to rebuild them they should be sleeved or run the risk of the factory bores distorting.

People think it's buy a set of forged rods and pistons and that's it. There is so many other things that need replacing and machining that adds up especially with our dollar compared to USA where majority of the parts have to be bought from with shipping costs. He has done plenty of these engines that get thrashed around circuits etc. and they drive home after it. Once it's done right it's a good investment that lasts for years.

thanks for the tip Shaneski. That name did come up but wasn't too sure if it was recent. Having a big block Mopar, I'm aware of the effect on parts pricing with the Aussie Dollar at the moment...here's hoping by the time I work out what I want/need, it will be a little improved! I'll check out 2NV and see what they're about.
