is there a reason why this was done?

also gets really hot under the hood, even after only a short drive.
even the hood rod gets really hot.

my first turbo car, so not sure if this is the norm.

It's not bolted to the bonnet, it's missing... That's the normal hood ducting... My guess is someone has previously had an after market inter cooler on that car and lost the cover...

And yeah, it gets hot in there, you're looking at very high temps in the engine (400+C is normal exhaust temps at full throttle) and sadly the 6 doesn't have the best under bonnet venting

shit man, this whole time i thought it was bolted to the hood lol.
theres no harm in not having a cover is there?

    thanks SarcasticOne.

Ideally you need the cover as it creates a seal between the engine and the hood seal to get the coolest air - stock Mazda covers are around, or you could make your own (look at the Corksport TMIC shroud)

As @Byrd said, there is some floating around (should be cheap), or can make your own...

They're probably good to have, as it has been proven to actually be beneficial, at least on stock IC, as it helps funnel the air into the core...

Edit: whilst I remember, make sure you've got the plastic inserts inside the grill (just behind the badge) these funnel air up into the ducting...

IC Covers are the kind of thing you can probably find for almost nothing. Heaps of people with aftermarket IC's out there who would like to get rid of it. No real harm in not having one, apart from some minor heat shielding that it provides.

ah yes, intercooler cover. not engine cover

thanks for the info guys. big help.

thats probably why my engine bay is really hot then.

pls let me know if u know anyone throwing away their stock cover.
    cheers.
