Thread: Changing gears 1st to 2nd - 2013 Mazda 3 MPS

  1. Default Changing gears 1st to 2nd - 2013 Mazda 3 MPS

My recently acquired '13 MPS has made me very happy. It's pretty much ticked off all the requirements I have in a car. However, I have noticed the gearbox to be quite stubborn, in particular in changing from 1st to 2nd. The changes are rarely smooth, and often result in crunching. This issue does not occur in changes to higher gears, eg 2nd to 3rd or 3rd to 4th, etc.

Is this anything to do with how I'm driving, or is it just a characteristic of this particular gearbox?

Triple syncros on 1st and 2nd...

Our gearboxes might not be the smoothest, but they're Friggin tough... People are putting 700+ HP through them in the states

Put in fresh gearbox fluid as the first step.

I recently got a MPS with 60k on the clock. Gearbox fluid has probably never been changed since the first change was 80k for it from memory. I just have the OEM fluid.

First and second always feels a bit notchy to me until it warms up a bit too.

    Enjoy your new ride.

Swap out the oil for some Castrol Syntrans and then adjust your shifter cable following this guide (I moved it slightly up the shaft): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duIbdq-MQtw

This http://www.ozmpsclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8322 + rear engine mount + short shift plate and weight + adjust cable + take your time + double-clutch = just ok shifting.
