Thread: Gearbox oil making my blood boil....

  1. Default Gearbox oil making my blood boil....

I know there has been a definitive thread posted on this and i know my Gen 1 is said to supposed to take the penrite 75-95 SYN GL5
    Repco say this is correct,
however mazda say it is suppossed to take penrite 75-90 GL4

Ive also read that the GL5 can be corrosive. ..

Can anyone please decide this for me?!

Yeah I've read it. But it doesnt actually confirm 100% with fact if the GL5 is corrosive or not

From personal experience I would recommend not using the Penrite GL5. I put it in my gearbox when it was working well when I first got my car. After that I got crunching in 2nd and 3rd mainly when cold. I've tried a number of different oils since and it has never been as good as it was before I put the Penrite in. I recommend either Nulon 75W-85 Smooth Shift GL4 or castrol VMX-M. They were the best for me.

The best I've found so far is Penrite Transgear 75W80 GL4. That's in my gen 1. There's an update leaflet posted in the definitive thread that outlines the change to 75W80.

Am going to put Penrite 75w85 GL-4 in mine when I get around to it. Have noticed a few which have ran it and had good results..

Plus almost all of the international "Mazdaspeed" owners, use a GL4 oil. I wouldn't run GL5.

    Link to this leaflet?

I decided to run Castrol Syntrans 75W85 GL4 in mine

Immediately after putting it in, my car felt like a BMW - shiftwise.

3 days on and on a cold morning i've began to notice slight crunching 1st - 2nd...
