    Default HELP: Engine Light Warning

    Hey guys,

The other day my engine warning light came on, so I took it into mazda where they plugged it into the computer. It came back with a fuel issue warning, reading that the fuel is running too lean. They said it may be wrong as the car is only a 2012 and has only done 29,000 k's. So they unplugged the battery to reset the computer, but the warning light came on again after about 20kms.

They said this may be because the car sat in the yard for so long, but I dont think this is the case, as the car had 4,000k's more on it that when it was traded in.

What do you think? have I bought a lemon? If so, I will sell the car and buy another.

Please be honest, I would rather know now while I still have some factory warranty left.

    Thanks

Does the CEL come on driving normally or while WOT? Some logs would help, as well as the actual CEL code. Get yourself an Accessport and get some logs or borrow a DashHawk. If it is actually running lean, it should show your LTFTs being out and that could point to a leak in your intake somewhere.

Did they even bother to g over the intake/intercooler hoses etc to look for leaks. Dealerships/caryards are pathetic they have no actual mechanical sense what so ever, all they seem to do is expect a diagnostic computer to fix it.
reminds me of a guy on the USA forum that took his car cause of a bad engine vibration, they plugged it in and said there is no engine codes showing so it must be fine...the engine actually had 2 bent rods.

You should start reading, mazdaspeedforums.org has some good newb threads to go over. Here's a good start: A Noob's Guide to Tuning Acronyms - Mazdaspeed Forums

Ask the shop what the actual CEL code was when they read it (usually starts with P) - if they can't tell you, borrow a DashHawk and it will read it. Punch that into Google and see what threads come up.

Unless it's running really bad along with that code, hardly think you have a lemon. More likely a loose clamp. But until you have that code, you don't have much to go on.

    Hey guys
So I had my oxygen sensor replaced and all was good until the engine light came back on.
Have been talking and people are saying they always come on when the fuel is under a qtr of a tank. Is this right?
Still this only explains one out of 3 times and doesnt really explain why it was running rough.

    What do you think?
Im starting to get fed up with this, only had the car a month

    Cheers

How soon did the engine light come back on after the replacement of the O2 sensor? Have you managed to find out what the code that popped up this time is? Has your car been modified?

This is the thing with enthusiast cars/performance cars. A lot of ppl out there including dealers have no clue about how some of these cars run.
What those people are saying doesnt make sense and is possibly because they have no clue. Engine warning lights should never come on no matter how much fuel is in the tank. That would mean my engine light will come on almost every 5 days for myself lol...

I reckon the best solution is try to get some of the SA guys here to come around with their dashhawk or Accessport and see what the code is.
Unfortunately, with some of these cars, you will need to take some interest in knowing how these cars run for you to have an idea on whats wrong with them - hence how this forum came about and is still here to this day. Some of the guys here have put in alot of time to get to know their MPS and I think you should too...

I apologise if I sound a bit harsh but that is the truth....

Seriously tho, if nothing else, go to a mechanics and get them to scan the code... And get the actual number, it'll be the biggest help to you and us...

I had a P2096 (A/F mix too lean) code that was a real bugger to get rid of. It eventually went away on its own but I have a feeling it was because the CAT in my CP-e Dump Pipe shat itself. It's since been replaced and had no CEL since.

Although the attached TSB doesn't apply to a 2012 model, it sounds quite similar to what you're experiencing. It's probably unlikely, but if the vehicle is completely stock it could be worth getting the dealer to check the camshaft driven fuel pump.

Thanks heaps for your help guys.
    Really appreciate it.

i have the original CEL code from when they replaced the O2 sensor. But not the most current one.
The mps was in for a service today and this is the first time they have seen the car since the CEL light came on a third time (for me, found out it happened when at the dealer etc) and they said that 'the fuel trim is confused as it is not used to my driving style compared to the previous owners, and that i should take it for long drives to reset it' this makes absolutely no sense, as I drove 120 odd ks a day for a week before the CEL came back on. It seems as though they are feeding me bullshit.

The CEL code reappeared after 2 days driving and about 100 k's.

That's rubbish. If it's still under new car warranty I'd be taking it to another dealer. Is it modified at all?

Where abouts in SA are you? If down south might be worth trying s&j automotive, they specialise in wrx's but have done ecutek tuning on a few mps's, so should be able to give you a reliable diagnosis!!!

I agree with @DD3. The dealers is feeding you bullshit. It may be leaking hose via the intakes or a failing fuel pump. Any of the South Australian guys could help him out? @zacman @Baz @MZSPD6 @Fully6mps

@matt45 does the car have any mods that you are aware of? Intake, tip, tmic etc? If you can find out from the dealer the exact code that will help too.

    Hey guys
no mods at all to the car. Ill have to wait for the light to come back on again and go to a better dealer as they reset all the codes. I found a mate with one of those plug in devices who will be able to help me read the codes.

s&j is a great idea, only issue is that i might have to pay for them to diagnose the issue. Where as mazda should be coping all these costs.

Seriously thinking of just buying a pushbike... Less maintenance hahaha

I'm sure you'll get it sorted at the right dealer. Don't give up on it, It's still got new car warranty!
