Default Has anyone removed their brake backing plates?

I will be upgrading to bigger rotors soon and I may need to fit matching bigger backing plates to clear the rotors.

What useful purpose do these serve?

Do they restrict airflow to cool the rotors?

Has anybody removed them? Were there any good or bad consequences?

They are heat shields, for the above reason.
    Do they restrict air flow?
Well thats a job for mythbusters, some say yes, some say no. Never seen conclusive proof. And there will be to many varients from car to car and in conditions to say one way or another

Wheel bearings, ABS sensors and steering arm bushings, CV joint boots etc. They shield all of these parts from the high temperatures.

That said, unless you are racing it at the track I don't think the backing plates really matter.

What is the reason for wanting to remove them?

I am looking to do this

    CX-9 sized brakes on a CX-7 - Mazdaspeed Forums

I just picked up the CX9 calliper assemblies this morning from a wrecking yard.

I was concerned that I might need larger backing plates to clear the larger CX9 rotors.

What I found out this morning was that the CX9 backing plates are press fit onto the hub assemblies, so they are not easily recycled.

Here is a photo of the CX7 front brake rotor and backing plate. I think these are made oversize and I should be able to fit a larger rotor. Worst case an angle grinder should fix it.

The general consensus seems to be to leave a backing plate on as a heat shield and to prevent road debris getting into the callipers.

Brandon, see my build thread. I successfully test fitted the CX9 rear calliper and rotor yesterday.

The piston section of the calliper looks to be the same between the CX7 and CX9 and they take the same brake pads.

The mounting frame part of the calliper varies to suit the rotor size. The bolt hole centres are the same to fit on the hub assembly.

This is the norm for most manufacturers these days.

Cars are all component built to save manufacturing costs.

The 3s for example have 4 different rotor sizes, 3 calipers and 4 caliper brackets. They all bolt onto the same hub assemblies.

I do not think ABS system have such problems. Before change you should check thoroughly your overall break system.

    @Wanneroo Mazda
I've been told that Mazda MPS turbos can develop bearing leaks and start smoking. Is this true?
