Thread: 18X8.5 +44 legal on gen 2?

    Default 18X8.5 +44 legal on gen 2?

So, long story short my car is with an ACT engineer getting assessed at the moment for rego (inspector didn't like my 4pot brakes). All my mods have been assessed, fiddled with, and signed off as legal, with one exception. I'm running 235/40 tyres on the stock 7.5" rims which are illegal.

I don't really want to scrap the tyres (Hankook RS3s), so figured its a good excuse to get some wider wheels to put them on. The catch is the wheels have to fit flush within the guards (rims cant be visible when looked at from above) or it will fail for the wheels instead.

Have been looking at Rota gforce and grid for a while in 18X8.5 +44 (Australian importer doesn't seem to stock +48 in either?). Does anyone know if there is any chance of these fitting within the stock guards and being genuinely legal? ( I don't have easy access to the car, so I cant really get out with a tape measure or anything, lol)

    Any help would be awesome!

Did you want to borrow some rx8's temporarily?
But yeah, the 18x8.5+44 are fine
You can go 1 inch wider than stock

Thanks guys. I'll order the rims and give me a shot. @SarcasticOne thanks a lot for the offer mate, that is awesome! If the Rotas don't pass, I'll get in touch with you.

In NSW at least, no 18x8.5 +44 is not legal.
Sam is half right. You can only increase the track by 25mm (12.5mm each side) with that offset and size track is increased 42mm

Not bashing offset, stace etc, just stating what is legal.

Track is measured from the centre of the rim anyway, isn't it? So it's only an 8mm (52-44) increase each side, so 16mm all up. Would be legal on a gen 1 as well at 52.2 offset.

Yeah good point, once upon a time it was measured from the outside (because it was easier)
The main thing is that so long as it doesn't rub on anything

My mechanic does rego inspections said in canberra as long as tread it's not poking out of guards that is fine in Canberra.
run some - camber will help too

the real legal side of things is that the top half of the 'wheel' needs to be inside the wheel arches. this is universal for any state that had adopted the NCOP rules. what one mechanic does/allows will differ from another. but go within the rules, and you'll always get the same result.

Thanks @chef @projectrracing That's what I was told by the engineer. Wheels need to be in the arch, some tyre sidewall can be visible from directly above, but not tread. I'm hoping these will be ok without any more camber needed. It's only 20mm further out than stock.
