Thread: Considering buying a Mazda 3/6 MPS :)

  1. Default Considering buying a Mazda 3/6 MPS :)

Hello guys, I'm interested in a Mazda 3 or 6 MPS, I'm looking at selling my Focus and getting a MPS3/6 to replace it, I'm off my P plates in March 2014 which is very soon They don't seem too expensive, looks like under $20K will get me a Gen 1 MPS3 or MPS6.

The Focus is diesel so I'm used to torquey engines and thats what I like, how are these like to drive in a daily situation? Also what about modding potential? My Focus has a few handling mods and now it handles like its on rails.

I'm a Ford man but I've had enough Fords, might make the jump over to Mazda even though the Focus and 3 are built on the same platform lol.

    Thanks guys.

Hi and welcome , 3 and 6 have huge potential and you will easily find a 6 and gen1 3 under $20000 , with minimal mods you can reach 200KW ATW and beyond very easily and safely.
    Lots of aftermarket parts too.
On the 3 and 6 make sure you get a Mechanic to check for smokey turbo , VVT and timing chain issues.

Thanks for the quick reply Chef

I had some work done on a turbo I have here at a local business who specialises in all that sorta stuff, talking to him he also sells these upgrades as "bolt on" for the MPS6 cars:

    MPS 6 GT2871R 400+

I noticed its only for 2007-2010 cars, is there a big difference between Gen 1/2?

The 6 appeals to me because its AWD and manual, but the 3 is also nice too.

How does the driveline hold up to increased torque?

With my Focus it was a bit of a bastard to match up parts, to change the rear sway bar I had to order a Mazda 3 bar, change the rear links, etc, and used an XR5 aftermarket intercooler, lots of guess work, hopefully with these things no such issue.

i like the 3, but often wish i had a 6 (AWD ftw)
with basic mods + tune can get 200-210kw at the wheels on stock turbo

however, a 6 is a bit more of a pain to do handling mods to (the RSB requires you to drop entire rear subframe)

The 3 driveline is strong ie gearbox and clutch but I recommend all 3 engine mounts get replaced because they can tear easily .Im at 240kw ATW and 497 nm ATW and driveline and clutch sweet with a new tune will be up around the 260kw ATW the 3 gen 1 main issues is VVT, chain and turbo.
6 MPS is a real sleeper ,cheap parts , fast and highly tuneable. the 6 weekness is chain,VVT and turbo ,all mounts need to be replaced and transfer case needs checking.

When the 6 gets tuned you also get more of a drivetrain loss as we'll so you won't net as many KW mod for mod and 6 weighs more too , at launch a 6 will smoke a 3 but in gear speed the 3 has the 6

    497NM?

Holy poo for a small engine that is a LOT of torque, hows it go with torque steer lol?

    2006 Mazda 3 BK Series 2 MPS

I'm looking at under $20K if I sell the Focus, more if my GMC Sierra also sells.

I like the idea of a sleeper, I like flying under the radar.

actually in all serious 497nm ATW has less torque steer on the bigger turbo than when I was at 415ATW on the stock turbo because the bigger turbo spools and reaches max torque later in the rev range than the stock K04

I've driven a few modded 6s MPS and I really like them ,such a sleeper and you will wipe the smile off those guys driving the WRX

Wouldn't that be a bit of a bastard in daily driving as you'd have a bigger "hole" where the turbo is trying to spool up? I've got that problem in my Focus under 1500 RPM its got nothing so at roundabouts etc if I want to time it to roll through, to get it moving quick enough I've always gotta be in first gear around 20km/h, theres a gap between 1st/2nd in that you can be going too slow for 2nd, foot to the floor it just crawls through but in 1st the car is revving high.

Or does the new turbo still have balls down low as well just that it makes more torque a bit higher up?

I'd like to see a stock vs bigger turbo dyno comparison just out of curiousity.

3000rpm and up the car pulls strong, sub 2500rpm on stock turbo, or most aftermarket gives you nothing, but the gears are so short you'll rarely be caught wanting
