Default VVT internal inspection picture collection

Ok, so I had a VVT unit lying around (thanks @2XS) form an early model CX-7 and thought it best to be pulled apart and viewed to our forum! The complete history of this engine is unknown but from what I believe a VVT issue was not on the cards and the K's unknown however the internal parts of the engine showed minimal wear so assuming low K CX-7 that over heated for unknown reason.

As it goes early model MPS6, CX-7 and MPS3 have been known to get "rattle/ticking" on start up this is covered by a TSB not covered in Australia.

Here are some pics of the VVT unit!
Pic 1 is the complete unit
Pic 2 is the gear removed from VVT body
Pic 3 is the Body assembly (outer housing bolts to cover and gear, inner section is secured to camshaft, not the allowable movement between the two parts)
Pic 4 is the inner section only
Pic 5 is the effected area of failure
Pic 6 is the locking pin that locates into the detent (pic 5)

This unti had roughly .020" back lash and as shown in pic 5 the amount of wear on the surface leading to the detent of which the locking pin loacates into. This part is not much worse then the VVT from my own engine which had only 43000k.

As far as I know the VVT noise is caused by this pin not been able to lock in correctly on start up resulting in the rattle or ticking noise, this fix for this is a revised unit from Mazda or DCR both of which have had heat treatment processes to improve the wear resistance.

I have another unit that I will inspect and post when I can be arsed

Put them on photobucket/picasa/facebook and link them, we dont have unlimited storage or bandwidth unfortunately and hosting in australia isnt cheap..

I have removed the dimension restrictions for BMP and PNG formats (not sure why we had them) and doubled the size of the JPG JPEG etc formats to 2MB.
If thats not big enough unfortunately you will have to link them to an external site

Following on from a post relating to the replacement of timing train components in another thread this VVT unit was dissassembled for inspection.

This unit came out of an 11/05 MPS6 with 128k and the VVT unit numbers are as follows,

    L3K9 12 4 XO
    C
    K6T90373
    5X27

Externally the unit looks and feels ok but after dissassembly its clear that this unit is well worn out around the lockout pin area and there is also wear on the internal side of the end covers of the unit, also noticable is the build up of sludge in the unit.

Pic 1 shows the inside of the front cover, you can see the wear from the VVT's range of movement.

Pic 2 shows the inside section of the VVT and the extreme amount of wear to the lockout pin detent.

Pic 3 shows the sludge build up in the units outer section.

    More VVT pics to add!

Todays entry is a little different from the previous post, suffering a more extreme VVT rattle I was expecting to see the inside of this particular unit in much worse shape given the outside is clearly effected by whats going on the inside.

    8/06 MPS6
    192xxxK's

    VVT #'s

    L3K9 12 4 X0
    C
    K6190373

This 1st pic shows the notches not aligned after 2 revolutions of engine, good indication that lock out pin is doing SFA!

This is the external damage, the shiney part is a retaining pin thats fitted sideways to hold the lockout pin assembly in the housing, its actually bent and pushed out enough to chip out the housing!

This is the inside of the outer housing where the lockout pin should be protruding from... its hiding inside that hole!

Here is the inner part of the unit showing where the lockout pin wears, I was expecting much more than that at 192k!
