He still has to comply with fair trading laws and any fair contract laws that apply in your state as far as I understand it.
Go and speak to another mechanic on the opposite side of town - chances are they'll know the shortcuts (ie who to lodge complaints with/how to get action).
You could even call the ACCC if he's trying to force you in to signing a contract that you don't think is fair and reasonable.
Or today tonight - they love this 'Aussie battler being hard done by' stuff. :-)

As someone that works at a dealership....You should have taken it to the people trained on your car - Such an easy job to stuff up with disastrous consequences.
