Good thing, or bad thing? Or a 'Who cares' sorta thing?
Who cares sorta thing. Ford and Mazda will most likely continue to work together on shared platforms. Mazda these days is in a better position (financially and in terms of market share and popularity) then when Ford came in and bought the share.
Ford has its share of financial woes being a large manufacturer and with massive debt. I think Mazda, with its strong capital and market share (thanks mostly due to the success of the Mazda 3) will be wanting to part ways to avoid being brought down by any of Ford's internal crisis. I agree they may continue platform & tech sharing with Ford.
Also, its common practice for Japanese to bunker down in financial crisis such as recession - another reason why Japan is commonly known as "Japan Inc."
