Thread: Cobb AP Tuning in Melbourne

Default Cobb AP Tuning in Melbourne

    Hi guys,

I thought I would post this up to give some other members information regarding Aus AP tuning. I just spoke with Tim from RX-8 Specialties in Melbourne. He is AP tuning the MPS platform (has done 5 or 6 so far), obviously has his own dyno etc, he is very well regarded on rx8 forums for those interested. He recently AP tuned a 3 mps with TIP and 175kw atw or there abouts and will be e85 tuning a mps next. He seems like a genuine guy and this could be good news for the Australian market looking for something other than an e-tune above OTS maps. Obviously the platform is very new to us so new tuners may receive criticism but I say give him a chance and see what happens. He already has some very happy customers and this looks like our first AP tuner for Australia.
Pricing, $100/hr (call to confirm) are his rates and this gives you dyno time obviously, depending on how long it takes for him to build you a map, anywhere from 2-5hrs etc. For those interested give him a call he is very informative.

Thanks Guys for the post and kind words its really appreciated!!! Over the past years I've really tried to help the RX-8 guys & girls and be as supportive as possible. At the end of the day we're all enthusiasts and enjoy working on and modding our cars. I enjoy being involved in these clubs because over the years customers have in fact become good friends also.

In regards to the tuning I feel the Melbourne market is limited (possibly Australia wide), the e-tuning has great merit and the likes of Horsepower Factory ( mazda edit) , Tunehouse ( Ecutek) are also very knowledgeble and experienced tuners and at no point want to take away credit where credit is due. However in business competition is healthy and I would like to offer a friendly and professional option.

Not all of us want the same things when it comes to tuning, its very important to look at overall package and having strong communication so you achieve the best results given the situation. Anyway thanks again and feel free to contact me anytime (03)9770 6373

    cheers Tim

    Hey tim,

could you get similar numbers like the U.S etuners on a fully bolted mps ? they get around 290-300whp of 98oct?

I think this depends alot on how the car handles the mods amongst numerous other things, every car is different.. Technically Tim has the same access as the U.S guys have so the possibilties should be the same.. Also depends on what the person wants out of the tune

  7. Default Cobb AP Tuning in Melbourne

It takes quite a bit of practice to master this platform. I've e-tuned or dyno tuned over 50 Mazdaspeeds/MPS and continue to learn something new or Cobb changes the logic or adds a new table every week.

That being said I'm sure they will get there eventually.

They have tuned a few MPS's and have used the AccessPort before. I've spoken at length to Tim about it before. Stand up guy and knows his stuff. Comes along to a few of our meets and answers plenty of questions. Just don't talk his ear off all day, share the love :-P

My personal opinion is this is the best of both worlds. Ap and a dyno based real time tune.
If i wasn't thinking of selling up in the next few months I'd give it a go.. But the missus would kill me spending more money on it lol

    Very good question Prem.
I will try my best to answer this from my experience.

    Cobb Accessport Pro's
*Cost effective tuning device with excellent worldwide support
*Ability to clear and check DTC, Datalog and change maps (including factory data) in one device
*Maps covering many variables dependent on vehicle modifications
*All tables clearly defined and constantly updated
*Access Tuner Race for custom tuning
*More user friendly for perhaps the diehard DIY tuner
    *E-tuner ability for customers

    Cobb Accessport Con's
*Limited software/hardware use here in Australia (given recently released)
*Limited workshops available with experience using program
*Not all platforms currently supported (CX-7)

    Mazda Edit Pro's
*Very complete program with detailed explanation of tables
    *Covers/support majority of Australian platforms
    *Constantly providing updates
    *Experienced tuners familiar with software(HPF)

    Mazda Edit Con's
    *More suited to workshop/experienced tuners
*At the peril of workshop or experienced person to make changes (even simple)
*Cost of tune as opposed to OTS map
*Required to purchase Tatrix interface and individual licence if wanting to datalog or check/clear dtc

There are probably others I have forgotten but this hopefully will give some insight. They are both very good programs and have merit.
    Hope this helps!!!
    cheers Tim

    Hi MPSNoob
I would be a little hesitant to jump to any conclusions regarding tuning results in the states. From my experience they are exaggerated and the chassis dyno at the end of the day is a specialist tool. Some are calibrated differently and have different compensation factors built in (which can fudge/changes the figures). Having said that from my understanding there are some guys here in Australia pushing the 230-240FWKW mark so its possible.
    cheers Tim

    Hi Ax,
I have not looked at the versatuner software as yet despite being aware of it. It is a open source program available to everyone and if it has tables defined like Mazda Edit then I'm sure its probably a good thing.
One very good point that Richierichness made was that with new releases/updates coming through all the time you are forever learning. They however all are trying to archieve the same thing. It is important to understand the power and flexibility of the software as nothing beats experience.
    Have you got Versatuner????
    cheers Tim

I also don't think that the HPF Mazedit can be used on the Gen 2's yet. They use Easy-flash. Just thought I'd throw that in there!

    Hi Grumpy,
Latest release from Mazda edit covers Gen2
I use both Mazda Edit and Cobb Accessport as you get the best of both worlds. I have customers with CX-7's chasing improved fuel economy and Mazda edit supports the platform with Torque reduction tables etc.

Tim has used it before... He tunes cars for a living as well and I'm sure there are more elaborate devices out there for different applications. This isn't msf... Vendors don't get to go around pooping on everyone lol.
