Thread: Running Nitrogen in your Tyres ?

Default Running Nitrogen in your Tyres ?

Did u just get up-selled for no reason... or is there actual advantages to running nitrogen in your tyres.

Sales guy told me that it gave your tyres longer life by not deflating as quickly or as much as normal air ??

    It's a scam, don't fall for it.

The idea was borrowed from aviation, where they use it for reasons such as operating at minus 57 degrees in the upper atmosphere then dropping into plus 40 degrees to land. In those situations nitrogen provides slightly better thermal stability. It's not the actual nitrogen that makes a difference, it's that pure nitrogen doesn't have any moisture like ordinary air. So they're using it to eliminate moisture, that's all.

Cars don't have that problem and like a lot of things with cars promoted by people with no engineering qualifications, there's not a shred of evidence that it makes any noticeable or measurable difference. In fact some of the claims about nitrogen, such as increasing tyre life, are outright lies.

The ordinary air in your tyres is already 78% nitrogen.

Tyre disposal charge is what the tyre retailer pays to a 3rd party tyre recycler/disposal agent to remove the old tyres.

And I agree with KMH, the nitrogen thing is just a way for the tyre retailer to make some extra margin, and what's more, what do you do if you have to inflate your tyres? you go back to the tyre place for more nitrogen!!! just use ordinary air

Composition of air (% by volume):
    Nitrogen (N2): 78.09%

    Oxygen (O2): 20.95%

    Argon (Ar): 0.93%

    Carbon dioxide (CO2): 0.038%

Others (less than 0.002% each): Neon (Ne), Helium (He), Krypton (Kr), Hydrogen (H2), Xenon (Xe).
    R36 - Just like an MPS6 except with a growly V6

    Default Helium FTW

How about helium? Reduce the unsprung weight!
Only prob : probably quicker to lose pressure coz the molecules are so small (atoms actually because helium doesn't form covalent molecular bonds)

And if you were to wheelspin, or skid with helium in your tyres would they make a comical high pitched squeeking noise ?
