Thread: Gearbox rebuild

    Default Gearbox rebuild

Hey, just wondering if anyone has had a gearbox rebuilt/strengthened as my car is in shop today getting a new clutch installed and mechanic seams to think gearbox could be to blame as well. This is my second gearbox already, I still have the original one in the shed, so does anyone know how much to have it rebuilt?? Im in Brisbane so if anyone has any recommendations and prices that would be great thanks

My question is the same as Dougs.

The one thing about MPS's is their gearboxes aren't really known for failures.
Bad shifting yes (in somes opinions) failures are rare

The synchro's aren't great in them. To over haul your trans your looking at roughly 1500+ that's dependent on how many items require replacement.

Ok so we were right new clutch in, all gears engage perfectly car drives awesome!!! Thank god!!! But just invade I was up for a rebuild box I did speak to a guy at Geartorque slacks creek who can rebuild box have it cryo treated and heavy duty bearings $2050. We will probably have this done next year anyway as we still have original gb in shed that second synchro is stuffed. But very glad were not up another gearbox! I had act clutch kit with streetlight fly wheel put in today. Feels and drives awesome!!!

The MPS box might have a heavy synchro but that does not make it a bad box or prone to premature failure. If anything, that synchro is there to help protect the box, especially as it is loaded up with multiple rings in 1st and 2nd, even if it is a frustration to those who want to force-shift. I can understand a box quitting if the car is being launched and dragged a lot, and for which it was never designed, but otherwise I'd attribute failure more to mistreatment.

Partly in consideration of the box and transmission, I rarely get onto boost in 1st and only occasionally in 2nd and even that is only partial, say up to 10psi. But otherwise, my usual driving in traffic doesn't permit much more performance than this anyway. If I need to escape from traffic or catch up to almost anything, 3rd will reel them in faster than most cars around. Some cars with DSG boxes are proving tough to catch though but few can sustain the MPS6 blast right through the speed range!
