Thread: Blown my bottom end

  1. Default Blown my bottom end

    Hi Guys,

    Newbie here...

I've had my Mazda 3 MPS BK for a few years....it was all happy untill 160,000kms.

Then POP....towed it to my mechanic who has been servicing it for a while now. He has diagnosed it as the bottom end letting go.

    $6500 to repair

    Bloody hell.....is that right??
Would a 2nd hand motor replacement be cheaper??
    What should i do...its a massive chunk o cash...

    Zoom zoom boom!

What mods if any out of interest?

To answer your q I have no idea if that's fair or not but I doubt you'll find a drop in replacement engine easily.

Have seen engines from write offs going for that same money 6-6.5k so if your going to spend that money, rebuilding is the best bet as you never what your going to get with a used engine..

As long as no hole in block, can pick up pistons and rods from edge for under $1k + balancing etc should be doable for sub 4k
@LittleredMPS and @MPS2NV would have a better idea though

Try Motosport Essentials. They are in Mulgrave specialising in race cars and in Mazdas . Also they're pretty reasonable and are happy to chat with you. 95621005

I get scared reading posts like this, that sucks mate!
As other have said, maybe you can just get new pistons/rods, will be alot cheaper than the whole engine.

Can happen to any blown (forced) engine at any time, not just mazda's. and with no rhyme or reason either. What you need to look at is the frequency of a particular disaster, if there has been recalls by manufacturer etc and also what mods at time of destruction.

i honestly think $6500 is a very fair price.
The labour involved for somebody to build your engine, remove and replace it from the car, pistons, rods, bearings is gonna add up super quickly.
i would say a second hand engine will be alot cheaper, maybe you can find a lower km one from a damaged car.

Question is - why? Under what conditions was the engine operating at the moment it let go? Any precursor noises or sensations? Panel alerts? How was oil level? It seems weird for a piston/cylinder and a camshaft bearing to let go at the same time. On that note, I'm not sure what is meant by "dropped the 3rd cylinder". You talk as if it had a liner that had lost clamping pressure, or was it a piston that had parted company with the rod, or the rod with the crank journal? Only the latter is really a "bottom end failure". Understanding these will assist somewhat and also give an idea as to what other damage needs to be checked for (e.g. is the crank journal scored). More specifics needed please.

also oil change every 5000k no if's or but's just do it i dont care if the manual says different at every 5000k change your oil greatly increases engine life, if i have been pushing my car particularly hard i'll change every 2500k
