Thread: Brake Caliper Discolouration

    Default Brake Caliper Discolouration

    Hi all
Getting prepped to paint my brake Calipers, but am concerned about cleaning them

    Any tips?

The fronts have gone a dark colour where the rust is barley visable

Rears are still silver with a bit of rust. Guessing that will come off with a brass brush

Should come off with a wire wheel Pete. The discolouration is most likely due to Mazda using simple cheap cast metal that's been unfinished. So there's nothing on the caliper to protect it from oxidising over time.

Mine's not got surface rust, but it does have the dark oxidisation same as yours

Cool. Been reading too much info on the web. Looking forward to it mate

When they repainted my drivers side rim, they go some overspray on my caliper. Do you think I'll need a stripper or solvent or do you think the wire wheel will do?

Wire wheel will get it all

You can grab some Prepsol or similar wax/grease remover if you want to wipe over the caliper once the wire wheel has been on it. But it's not completely necessary IMO. OK if you want the belt/braces approach

Use a grinder with a brass wire wheel.

Have you been thrashing it a bit? Looks like heat discoloration, my calipers turned that kind of color after my last track day.

Well with the amount of power my stocky engine has, it thrashes itself!!!!

Only joking. I don't drive it hard a lot. People call me spirited driver, but brakes aren't part of the equation

Still not sure why but hopefully a few nice coats of paint will protect it from further discolouration

Slixx, did you get your calipers painted? What kind of paint did you use? When I first looked at the photos I thought it could have been discolored due to the brake dust, but upon looking at it a little closer it doesn't seem to be that.

Painted them with 3M Caliper paint. It comes in a spray can

I cleaned them with a wire brush wheel on a drill. They came up pretty good

Coat of 3M Caliper Clear over the top to protect it

I've tried that with rear and damaged the paint trying to put the Rattle springs on so I recommend not to! Also fronts were damaged when I changed rotors and pads so leave them on. Gotta redo them going to change colour while I'm at it.

Decided it was more hassle than it was worth. Was easier to tape up everything else

I took calipers off to do mine and left the springs their proper colour but as said its impossible not to chip when putting the springs back on, mine chipped a bit and i just touched up around the spring, next time ill probably just paint the lot.
Either way, next time you change pads you're going to have to redo because it will chip when you take the springs off and put them back on.

+1 we figured as long as the surface was pepper correctly and give. Enough heat and time to cure, it shouldn't be a problem
