Ah right. Thought so
A lot of places get mixed up between Gen I and Gen II 2009 models
Maybe mine weighs more coz I have blue LEDs in the footwell

driven about 5 gen 1's and 4 gen 2's. All gen 1's were so much quicker and more aggressive. Raw power vs refined ride. My gen 1 only has a hpf tune and cai and runs 13.7 @105mph. Most gen 2's with 5k worth of mods still run pb times of low 14's.
The Gen I has shorter ratios so probably is slightly quicker in gear.
It also feels faster because the Gen I is a bit less refined, the Gen II is a bit smoother and that will make it feel slower.

When the Gen2 was coming out, the reports that they weren't changing the engine at all was a shock, but they said it was a great powerplant that had plenty of power. What needed improving over models was the handling and the power curve. Gen 1 had a rather sharp torque curve originally, then they were asked to be remapped by the dealers to prevent possible engine mount bolts coming loose. This smoothed them out, but is still sharp compared to the Gen 2. The peak power and torque are identical, but as others have mentioned, the slightly wider tyres/wheels (0.5 inch), the gear ratios, the aerodynamics and the the modified torque curve optimised the Gen 2 as a better all-round package, making use of the power available rather than just spinning wheels or throwing the car sideways with torque steer.
So basically all the 'flaws' with the gen 1 expect its aggressive power curve and shorter 4th - 6th gears and aero, could be cured by getting better tyres, short shift plate and a rear engine mount.
Have yu ever driven a Gen2 @Bakis ? The seating position is different, you dont have to reach for gear changes everything is at finger tips

Gen2 is more thought out
Many want Power not many hold it long.........
oh this is a sad thread to read when you have a gen 2
I have the Gen1 and i test drove the Gen2 and thought "wow this is boring, it feels slow". way too smooth for my liking. I feel that the Gen1 is more sportier with a sportier feel! I am however jealous the gears are closer to the driver in the Gen2
When I was in the market to buy a MPS I test drove a GenI and GenII
I drove the Gen I liked I owner it. It was so easy and I felt at home. The Gen II I was rough and couldnt change the gear really smoothly like the Gen I
I bought the Gen II simply because of price. I couldn't justify the extra 45,000kms for only $6500 less. Plus with all the extras is was better value.
That being said, the Gen II is fine now and I've learnt how to drive it well do I don't have that problem and it is more refined
I drove @premhk Gen I and I love the power delivery though and it's still awesome

Bahaha, Gen II owners crack me up. Using works like "refined" in place of the more correct "boring" :P

Wasn't going to be long before this disintegrated into a personal/subjective argument....!!
Haha you guys crack me up, but everyones posts and opinions are valid in my opinion. Im leanimg towards a gen 2 I think, but the gen 1 definately has the outright fun factor out of the box. I definately noticed the gen 1 had a very agressive induction noise in comparison to the gen 2, I recon that could be part the reason why it might feel slower
Interesting.. comparing the MPS's we have here GEN1 240kw 440nm 1405kg (nm is at the engine) GEN2 212kw 410nm atw 1403kg. gen 2 is quicker to 180kph in every gear till 180kph after this Gen1 pulls away, both cars are still on the power band. BUT the gen2 stays on the road at this speed, feels more planted. the aero i think is more down force less slippery

Where did you get those power figures?! When you say 'we have here' you mean in Australia? Or in your garage?

Ha Ha Ha ,gota love the way this thread is going .
I have had both gen1 (3yrs) gen2 0ver 2 yrs . the gen 1 sucked it was a test mule ,way too flighty ,too much understeer, faulty water pumps, faulty pcv system, faulty air induction ,not enough thought into engine bay air flow ETC ETC .
The gen 1 was mazdas intro into the hot hatch arena (good first endeavour ) ,but needed consumer time ,so as to engineer a better all round hatch .
Stick that up your pipes and smoke it!!!!!!!!!..
