Thread: Can flashing an ECU correct a CEL?

  1. Default Can flashing an ECU correct a CEL?

    Hi All,

My GEN II 3 MPS is displaying two CEL(P2096 and P0420). I have cleared the lights a number of times but the P2096 always seems to return within 50km. After a bit of research it appears that these warnings are due to the after market intake and exhaust and the sensors are not reading the correct variables and through a CEL.

I understand the the GEN II's are quite susceptible to CEL's once modded. My question is does anyone know if flashing the ECU can fix these issues? I am assuming that flashing the ECU can changes the non vital sensors to accept variables outside of the stock parameters.

I would like to get rid of the CEL's for good and, if possible, keep my exhaust and intake. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, what exhaust & intake do you have, do you have a downpipe and is it a catted downpipe or catless?
    Cheers.

    search is a wonderful thing:
    P2096 http://www.ozmpsclub.com/forum/elect...enanigans.html
    P0420 http://www.ozmpsclub.com/forum/tech-...tml#post112400

believe it's due to 02 sensor positioning on some aftermarket DP's being before the cat rather than after (or running a 100-CEL/catless exhaust)

+1 to above post, firstly identify what mod is causing cel, did you install both intake and downpipe at same time if so .
Try running car without intake for a day or two first. Then use search.

To answer your question re flashing with (ecuteck) Not that i believe..

I've been through this and come out the other side, no P2096 for a long time.

Tell us about your exhaust changes. I did a "Best Mufflers" DP which included a single 100 Cell Cat. I had P2096 CEL's for months. So I went to @2XS , got a 200cell cat, but had the second O2 sensor moved AFTER the cat. Since then, no P2096.

    Hi Guys,
@jnt - I'm not sure as I didn't purchase the mods. I am going to have a look at the parts today and crawl under the car to see if I can see any brand names and go from there. The box around the pod filter has a brand name for an exhaust shop so that could be the type of exhaust. Products-Custom Exhaust Specialists-CES.
@SarcasticOne - Thanks for the info. I had already looked at these post briefly but I was curious if an ECU flash can change the variables that the ECU will expect. It appears not.
@Oldhead - The car was purchased with the mods already completed and unfortunately the stock parts were mot included so I cannot revert the changes for a test to identify the issue.
@Yeldarb - An aftermarket exhaust is fitted, however I didn't fit it. The car was purchased secondhand with these mods already completed. I am going to jump underneath the car to have a bit of a look today.
    @kelvin33 - I am in ACT

    Hi Matt,

If you have a CES Exhaust system, with the Downpipe from CES then they are quality parts and are not usually known to cause problems, I would check that there is no exhaust leak and that there is a catalytic converter in the exhaust system, if I am not wrong the cat will be just after the downpipe (on the race pipe) with an extended wire for the sensor that will be located just after the cat. There is a gent on these forums who know all there is to know about CES products so he may chime in @2XS

For the P2096 code I have had that before and it turned out to be a leak after the MAF sensor on the SRI something had just come loose, so I tightened it up cleaned the MAF with MAF cleaner spray and the CEL has never come back.

Hope this helps you out. Cheers.

What car and model do you have?
    What mods?
Pics of mods (if in doubt about names)

If you have a CES DP and exhaust, you should talk to them. (You wouldn't want to hear what I have to say, but, I'd get a 1 week ban for the comments)

wow, good to know. I thought the only way to remove that was to move the 2nd sensor after the cat.
    happily corrected

    Hi All,

I sort of stumbled across this thread while playing around with Tapatalk. I decided I should post a reply to close out the tread gracefully. I started this thread a long time ago and am not looking to continue the discussion, just wanting to add my findings on the off chance someone stumbles across this thread looking for the answer to the question I asked.

    Background:
I purchased my car from a car dealer in QLD while on holiday’s and the car has a SRI and dump pipe fitted. I purchased the car in February 2012 (I think) and the car performed great with no CEL’s until it started to get cold. I asked a few questions on OzMPSClub to understand my options but never really got an answer for my specific question, but thanks to everyone that posted their thoughts.

    Result:
The car kept on throwing a P2906 light, post cat fuel trim to lean. After looking for a leak in the exhaust and discussing the issue with a number of people, I decided to see if this light could be disabled as it seemed to be a null issue. The main giveaway is the CEL would only come on in winter, never in summer.

    My question was:

    The answer is:
Yes either via a EcuTek tune, Chip Torque tune or via a Cobb AccessPort. I decided to go the later as I want to do additional mods and don’t want to re-tune the car at $1000+ a pop.

Disabling these lights is a simple process with a Cobb AccessPort and Access Tuner Racer(ATR). Within ATR navigate to Edit -> Advanced Parameters -> Un-tick the desired code, then save and flash the map.

    Problem solved.
