Thread: Help...! P2188 CEL Code System too rich at idle...?

Question Help...! P2188 CEL Code System too rich at idle...?

    A little help please...!

I have managed to get my cel scanned (kindly by Matt aka- RED3VIL)

The code it has put forward is- P2188 CEL Code System too rich at idle...?

Any ideas on the cause of this? I have a Corksport TIP & SRI intake on it and it has been on it for ages without hassles. It has flashed up 3-4 times and 3 of the 4 times over the last week. The first time was months ago.

    -bad injector
    -leak between turbo and mani
    -dead maf
    -maf needs to be calibrated

when you say leak between turbo and manifold do you mean on the charge side not intake side?
or just an air leak from the filter back to the turbo? eg split or loose hose or pipe.

Rich at idle ,could mean your filter needs cleaning and or your maf sensor is dirty.
Also just check that the intake tubes from your air filter and the TI are tight .
    Good luck .

Thanks mate. I had a look last night and everything looks good. I re tightened all the clamps for the TIP & SRI and will get come MAF cleaner today and give it a hose down over the next few days…

I did notice that the BPV recirculation hose looks to be a bit ratty looking where it connects to the TIP. If it was leaking would this cause such a code?

BPV hose should not cause this problem of being rich, odds are MAF sensor or air cleaner clogged causing not enough air being read by sensor at low speed (idle) BP hose re enters re circulated air behind the Maf sensor not in front ,therefore it can not be measured .
Way to many mods, way too much money spent, way way too much time spent = the wifes no 1 Enemy.

Well the mysterious light is back...

I had been thinking that she was sounding a little rough at idle so i suppose the code makes sense. I will grab the maf cleaner and give that a go and I will also pull the intake apart and check for leaks I guess...

Well I have had almost a week without a light (touch wood).

I cleaned the MAF & tightened all the inlet hoses. I haven’t had a chance to change out the ratty BP hose but it appears that that was not the issue. I did however find that the crank case breather hose was kinked. The hose length from stock and for the corksport TIP was different and had over time become kinked. I rectified this by cutting it short and rerouting it for better un obstructed flow.

Sooooooooooo… hopefully I have solved the issue. Thanks for the responses and help, I hope this helps anyone else with a similar issue. I also can’t recommend enough cleaning the MAF. Well worth doing it as a part of regular maintenance.

    Hey guys,

I have been getting the P2188 CEL as well after a few days i flashed it with the Cobb ap, maps were correct and double checked it with Cobb tech guys. Uninstalled it to factory, now after 2 weeks the CEL like came on, P2188.

I have Cleaned my air filter, Cleaned the MAF sensor, removed the entire CAI system, and connected it back made sure everything was secure and tight.

And now the light is coming back again.

I will be installing my turbo inlet hose this weekend, so i will have a more closer look, but is there any ideas what could be causing this other then what is mentioned above?

    Cheers

    Hi Andrew,

I’ve been flat out mate and had no time to reply. I have had a few things that I have changed and found have worked. I disassembled and re installed (plus re tightened) the entire intake back to the turbo. Then I had a kinked oil breather hose from my TIP install. Light went out for a few weeks then came back. I disassembled and re installed (plus re tightened) the entire intake back to the turbo and cleaned the filter and MAF sensor as well AGAIN! And it then disappeared. Then I had a BPV re-circulation hose that was worn and split. So I have replaced that and cleaned the filter and MAF sensor as well AGAIN!!!. The light is out now and will hopefully stay out. I have a feeling now in hindsight that it may have been related also in part to a high flow filter I was using. The high flow part was great. However the low filtration was not so cool. I’ve had loads of modded motors over the years and none have been so precious and fickle as the Mazda. I love it but they just don’t make them like they did in the 90’s…

My advice is take your time when you install your TIP & clean the MAF again. But this time thoroughly clean your filter as well. And check all the little hoses from the filter to the turbo, and also the intercooler hoses as well as I have also read from my research that these can come loose over time as well. If all that fails from what I understand it could be a leaky injector or something more serious to do with the fuelling system. However before thinking down those lines I would return the car to stock and see if It keeps doing it (only if it keeps popping up and you are 100% sure it is all clean and tight).

let me know how you get on.

    Hey Pete,

    Thanks for that info.

I have already returned the car to stock and 2 weeks later the CEL has came on for P2188 which was so weird, just happened when i was at the lights.

The car seems to run and perform normal when the CEL is still on, just seeing now if it will turn off by itself now.

I am planning to install the turbo inlet pipe on saturday and i will recheck all the pipes and cables as well as the top mount intercooler pipes as well.

i have had my K&N typhoon CAI install for 2 years, no issues ever.

I pray that it isnt a leaky injector as i only have extended used car warranty with mazda now for another 2 years and for it happen again 2 weeks after i put it back to stock is bizar!!!

Will let you know how i go, otherwise i will have to take it in to mazda :S

    Cheers

    Hi Mate,

It is funny that you say it came on at the lights. That happened to the 6 as well. I also had my CorkSport intake & TIP on for at least 12 months before it showed up with that code. And the same as you it drove just fine and without issue for weeks with the light on. But it never turned itself off. When you do your install of your TIP over the weekend I would thoroughly clean the filter as well. Like I said it has gone now but I can’t say exactly what got rid of it as it seemed to be different stuff each time.

Also when I say 'return to stock' I meant that you should re-install the factory air box and intake. And tune it to the stage 0 tune. Then see if the light comes back.

But I would only do this as a last resort before heading to a specialist. The most painful thing about getting a code like this it is not an exact since as to the cause of it. So I had to resort to trial and error.

Let me know how you go...

i have installed my inlet pipe, was a PINB but after 2 hours was all done. I checked all the hoses and tightened the clamps, making sure there is no leaks at all.

So far the CEL light has not came on (thank god, fingers crossed) the car now sounds much better with the inlet pipe. i will be leaving it on stock ECU for the time being to make sure everything is sweet.

Thanks for all your help guys, it was just strange that it just went off after 2-3days. :s
