Thread: Suspension clunk

    Default Suspension clunk

    Hey Guys,

Since a couple of days ago, I've been hearing this loud clunk from the rear right area. I've inspected every nut and bolt and can't seem to find the source of the noise. I've even pulled apart my end links, they seem to be in good nick too. Are the connections meant to be greased up because they're looking a bit dry right now. I've ruled out faulty diff mounts after having had a close look at them. Even tried shaking the crap out of it. My mechanic thinks it could be coming from the top mounts of the shock but I've tighten all three bolts. Have a look at the video and see what you guys think it might be.

BTW, I have a set of BC Coil overs installed.

    Cheers

Damn, when you said clunk you werent kidding.

Never heard anything like that before, thats all I can tell you.

The only thing I could think of that would make a noise like that is a stuffed strut or possibly a broken diff mount.

Just on the off chance, have you checked your exhaust as well?

I've checked everything that would move under there. The clunk is exaggerated due to the crappy mic on my phone. It's not as bad as it seems in that video. I'll try to get an interior recording done some time tomorrow.

Struts seem fine (no excessive bounce or leakage)

I tried to shake the exhaust as much as I could but still, it couldn't replicate that sound. I live in south side Brisbane.

Check your rear swaybar end links, tighten them down while you are under there just remember to hold back with a 6mm allen wrench. Also check the rear diff mount. Good luck.

Oi David, i had these "clinks" few weeks back after driving home and i took it down to Fulcrum suspensions in Browns Plains as they did the installation, turns out it was the endlinks that was loose due to them being new from the coilovers and swaybars and they flex which causes a gap, hence my swaybar was moving. Id take it down for them to have a good look hey they are top blokes and will look after you.

Thanks Eddie. Sounds like it could be the same problem. I might get my mechanic to check it out first since I've already booked with him. He's a top bloke so I want to give him my business haha Would it still be safe to drive on from now until Friday?

Did you have stock endlinks and sway bars when this happened?

Top of the shock mounts on the back of a 6 has been known to come loose. also known to break.
other things besides what others have said it to look and see if the sway bar is hitting the body. this can happen on lowered cars as it adjusts the angle of the sway bar. its set at an angle for a reason. fixed with adjustable end links.

common place for problems on the 3s is the sway bar mounting rubbers. could also be a possibility here aswell

And dont rule out things because you "have given it a shake" you must be one damn strong person to be able to simulate the loads forced on a car when driving.
The shake test will only work when things are really really stuffed

Placing my bets on it being a loose object in the back. Spare tyre or car jack.

Thought it was the car jack so I took everything out. Still making the noise!

I gave my car a test drive last night and it definitely sounds like it's the sway bar making the noise. Right now. I'm hearing a slight tinging noise as well as that clunk noise. Will have a look at the sway bar again to see if it is hitting anything.

Does it make the noise when the loading on the suspension shifts from one side to the other? When my swaybar came loose it wouldnt make any noise if it was loaded up and riding bumps but as soon as I shifted from left to right it would make an awful noise. If the noise is there regardless and still clunks while you're going around a corner with the swaybar loaded up then it will be something else. Probably a loose connecting arm or dead bushing somewhere.

A suspension specialist can chuck it on a shock dyno and they should diagnose it pretty quickly.
