Thread: What modification first?

  1. Default What modification first?

So, I have finally started working again and have some cash to spend as a present to myself.

I want to get the CPE FMIC, TBE and PnP Standback.

What should go first out of the TBE and FMIC.

I am worried about the turbo seals as my car is a 2006 build.

How much work is involved in checking the seals? Is it something I should get Mazda to do before I get the TBE so if they are loose I can get them replaced under warranty?

I am aware that some people have had them replaced under warranty after having the TBE fitted but I also know that if they choose they can blame the TBE for the issue as the drop in back pressure is the cause of the leak.

    So 2 questions:
Do I get the FMIC or TBE first?
Should I get Mazda to check the turbo seals before warranty expires?

    Thanks.

If it was me, I'd go the exhaust, such nice noises can be unleashed from our motors (am still saving for mine)

Not sure about turbo seals, so will be interested to see what responses are posted

Mate, you'd be silly not to go the exhaust.

FMIC's are good, but dont really give you any extra bang for your buck, other than reducing engine heatsoak. The stock TMIC's add to engine heatsoak which creates a minor performance drop over a spirited run.

However, if you go the exhaust, I suggest picking up a CAI at the same time.

If you're looking for noticable results - go with the exhaust. You won't always notice a difference with the FMIC, IMHO. . Is that enough acronyms for you

I also think the TBE first too, but I am unsure about the turbo issues and the FMIC has no known problems to me.

Mate, go the TBE and you'll never look back! I've got the CPE TBE on mine, and it made a HUGE difference! And it sounds awesome to boot! I did have some minor smoking issues with mine at idle after fitting it, but changing from Castrol Edge 5w30 to Royal Purple 10w40 and also fitting the CPE XcelNANO SRI have gotten rid of the smoking all together.. I personally think they smoke with the stock exhaust, but the 2 cats mask the smoke somewhat..

Ps. Just remember you will need to get the exhaust tip shortened about 70mm as the USDM Mazdaspeeds have a slightly longer rear bumper. I was lazy and just got mine shortened recently by my local exhaust place, only took them 10 mins.

Pps. Check out some of my youtube vids for some CPE lovin! -------------> YouTube - Ricebubble87's Channel

Toss of a coin here. Both will yield good results and I don't think there is a right or wrong way to go about it. The TBE will be a bigger job than the FMIC though.

I would go the TBE as well, just for the more agressive sound

TBE for sure, but, support Australia, buy the CES Racing System, Like me and Wardski. Personally, I am getting a FMIC for mine, but I'll make the lot myself. The only issue I have with the TMIC is the heatsoak at the drags or after I go into a shop for 3-5 minutes.

How much is the CES system?

I know it is a very good bit of gear.

I also know its not cheap. I have emailed them in the past about it.

Cobb intakes are fine. Just make sure you get one combined with a TBE

If you're worried about Turbo Seals, then get an exhaust which still has enough back pressure to keep it all together (like the CES) and most importantly, get the job done right.

I hate to admit it, but I saw a number of TOTALLY botched arse jobs on the Fulcrum day, and people were staring in awe as to how perfect the CES system was (even after being on the road for over 12,000km). Yes its expensive, but fking hell, you get exactly what you paid for. A beautiful job, perfect welds, no unusual heat spots... 200% raw unadulterated exhaust porn. If I was to go get another exhaust, I'd go CES over, and over again.. quite possibly twice on Sundays

Approx $2600 installed. Trevor may have discounted the price with the Econ downturn tho. Best to contact them and see what they can do for you.

    Is that the installed price?

Something to consider there as the downpipe install on my 6 was around $550.

It was that price installed for me.

A full CPE TBE would cost you about that with the current exchange.
