Default MPS 6 Transfer Case problem

I have a chipped gear in my transfer unit, looking to replace whole unit as will be less labour intensive though finding the transfer unit second hand is a difficult task. Found one place that is looking at $1250, not sure if this is a good price or not for a second hand unit?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

There is a ticking sound, happens when moving whether under load or not. I've had it in at a Mazda mechanic whom is a mate of mine, they removed something that drives the back wheels and noise stopped. Also had it on the hoist, and did a few other checks along with changing the oil in the transfer, it came out a lovely silver colour.

I'm definately on the look out for a used Transfer unit, it's pretty much crapped itself. Drove up the road the other day and went to take off around a corner (slowly) and there was a big crunch and a rattle. Seemed to right itself enough to get it home. Anyone hear of one it'd be highly appreciated. Up until then I'm getting a mazda mate to pull it apart and see how much has gone wrong.

i have posted in another thread also. Mine has crapped itself. The thing that really annoys me is that i treat it like a baby so i dont know why this has happened? And the stupid way Mazda has designed the car it takes around 16 hours to take the thing out and put it back in, so its bloody expensive, and to top that off, they rip you off for parts big time. Its going to cost me $2k in parts to replace the bearings and 3 small parts in the case which is just ridiculous , and no one else makes the parts , so the only option is new parts from Mazda, or source a 2nd hand transfer case....

    very annoying !

To source a replacement you can also look for one out of a CX-7...

Unsure that it is poor design so much as a general AWD issue. When first getting my clutch done, research suggests that 8-10 hours is the norm for EVO clutches as well. ANY east-west engine is a hassle once you start trying to get to the drive train.

Do 4X4 (real ones...crossovers are just jacked up, de-tuned MPS 6's) owners suffer this? Or is it only us schmucks with AWD made from FWD cars?

Gimme a HQ to do clutch in any day! Handful of spanners and a couple of jacks in the driveway...

If there is a generic fault in the transfer case we should all get together and put pressure on Mazda to recall the car ! F'ING bastards !!! Take it public as far as i am concerned !

Erk. Not good. Is there any trend in what year / how many KM's have been done?

My '07 at 68k's has no issues that I know of yet.

The problem occurred at 150,000km and i treat my car like an absolute baby. I have never had the tacho over 4,000 ..........Ever !!

In the car service schedule it says that the oil in the transfer case never has to be changed unless its been submerged in water. What a FUC**NG joke ! My gearbox specialist who fixed it said that it should be checked without fail every 10,000km and replaced at least every 30,000km otherwise the bearings and seals will fail which in my case, meant big bucks sadly - ( At least $4k to do the fix with new parts)

The parts in the transfer case are under engineered sadly, so i wouldnt be thrashing the car at all, or driving hard around corners as this could cause slippage and loss of traction which could cause problems in the 4WD system

Hmm I would say that most MPS' are driven with at least some occasional spirited driving ( all legal, of course! ) and I know when I got mine I slipped and stuffed the occasional gear change and the car has stood up well.

I'm due for a service in the next couple of weeks so will ask them ( penfolds burwood ) to give it a visual inspection and see if there's anything obvious.

Out of interest are you running the same rubber back and front?

Gday - I run the same 4 tyres. Always have - Make sure your mechanic drops the sump plug out of the transfer case and checks the lucidity of the oil

    Hi guys,

I apoligise in advance if this is the wrong place to post this, new here...

I previously had a transfer case leak which was repaired. 30,000kms after a service the mechanic told me it was back. After further investigation I found that the leak wasn't coming from any of the places I have already seen on this forum but from higher up... After driving a bit I found that it was seeping from the edges of this little cap looking thing?? I have no idea what it is and have looked through all of the manuals that I can find. It can be moved around a little as well (it's not firm in place). It is about 1-2cms in diameter and has a small gasket around it, my gasket looks a little damaged thus the leak.

If anyone could tell me what this thing is I would really appreciate it.

Sorry these are the best pics I could get.
