I picked my map based on AFR. There wasn't a massive amount of difference between the various intake sizes, but the AFR does change enough to matter.
These are my thoughts, but the one I have performs well otherwise.... In a couple of years when mine dies, I reckon I'll invest in a Spitwater or similar industrial rig.

Check the spring and travel... I've seen wear like that on other cammed systems and it usually indicates the clearances and travel on the Cam Lobe/Follower are not set up correctly. It could also be...

We have one here. They do coffee too and it's about 2km down the road from the Jerky shop :p Stick to the original plan though.
