More than Exhausts and Intakes...

Ok, so I'm a qualified mechanic by trade, and I know how to get power from an engine. The best place to start is letting the engine breath. Free flowing exhaust system from the head/s to the final hole at the rear bar, and a plentiful supply of oxygen to the combustion chamber via a free flowing air filter and intake path. These are simple and cost effective way to let an engine perform to it's better potential. Alot of guys on here have done these mods, and I will have soon too.
The next step, after more air in and out is fuel. Tweaking an ECU to feed more fuel in, and at the right time has a dramatic effect on how an engine performs thoughout the entire RPM range. (This will be on my cards at some stage too.)
The next stage of modifying is further allowing better flow on both exhaust and intake charges is a more in depth change to mechanical components. The common 'port and polish' of the cylinder heads. For those who don't know, porting of the heads open up the path to/from the combustion chamber to allow more charge/exhaust to flow in/out. A polish of the exhaust ports makes a smoother surface for less drag to expel waste gases as quickly and efficiently as possible. Usually done at the same time is CAMSHAFTS... Believe it or not people, CAMSHAFTS are the brains of the internal combustion engine.
Now that I've bored you all to tears, I'd like to know has anyone got, or know of anyone who has got, a set of cams in their MPS??? I've seen nothing on the posts about anything, and maybe something I'd look at doing in the future...

I haven't seen any info on aftermarket cams or reground stock cams in the DISI Turbo MZR (MPS motor) with variable valve timing (VVT). Cosworth does cams for the non-VVT 2.3 Mazda MZR/Ford Duratec and I'm sure there would be others around for that application but I haven't seen anything for ours.

No one has probably got as far as camshaft mods due to the comparitively limited number cars with this motor around the world, relatively new platform and the good gains avaiable from the basic intake/exhaust/cooling/turbo mods.

If you went for a set of cams would you disable the VVT? I wonder what would happen if you reground the stockers for a bit more lift and duration and ran them with the VVT still on?

I'd leave Variable Vale Timing on. I've seen many modified engines with VVT. IE; Honda S2000, Falcon xr6, etc. There are lots of local cam grinders around that can grind awesome cams. They would know how to grind up a turbo'd, VVT'd cam up with the right characteristics for our engines. I might start asking some questions at some shops around here... Hmmm... (food for thought)

I was always into regrind cams with the old nissans, mazdas. good way to go to bring the fun higher into the rev range. the old 30/70 or 50/80 for (example) inlet outlets .. im sure someone could do what ever u wanted.. but its a bit different with teh ecu calling the shots. vvt and ecu control is the way to go (control the ecu). if you wanted to push firther i will be waiting to see how u go... but always remember that with higher rpm u must look at balance, oil preasure, cooling, seals.. im sure ur aware of this... BUT im keen to see where this goes :):):).. right behind u bud:2thumb:

I cammed up my old Datto L20. Really brings the engine alive. Nothing quite like a carb engine (for us older guys) with a nice warm cam on song down the freeway... Ahhh... The old days were simpler. The new days are faster...
All one has to do, is tell the cam shop what the specs of the car is (diff ratio, gears, turbo, vvt, what RPM the engine is more than likely gonna see, what fuel, what mods, etc...) and what you want the cams to do. As for the ECU, after the mods have been done (including cams), get it tuned by the professionals on a dyno, and viola... a million horsepower*.

*may be incorrect assumption on actual horsepower. :p

I might seriously look into this. See what price can be done, and see what kind of characteristics the 'new' engine will have.
I'll make a phonecall or two on Monday and see what I can find out. Let you all know everything I find out... :2thumb:

Nice find mate. It will be interesting to see how you go with cams on the MPS engine. Keep us informed if you can.

Even in the states cams are hard to come by. One place does custom grinds, but I wanna find out more info on them first. Like how much head work is needed if any.
I also had a browse of the PT Performance website, seems there's some good gear on there too. Well explained reasons for making things the way they do. Anybody deal with these guys at all???

I still have a Bluebird with an L20 with 290deg cam, 48mm side-draft Dellorto and custom 2XS 4 into 1 race headers.

I miss my Datsun.
I had a cam, Paceys, and a Weber from a 2L Escort with twin barrels.
3 speed auto... hahaha
Killed an R33 one night... hehehe
