Bit of a silly question but are the boot lid tail lights on the 6 supposed to light up at all? (red ones next to the reverse lights)

Nope. And you will find (if you go ahead and pull it all apart like I did) That there are no wiring looms or provisions to make them work.
if you want them working, I'd buy a set of full LED replacement housings for it
they dont work OEM/ factory, i ran some wiring to it via the side brake lights , drilled some holes put some bulb fittings + bulbs and it looks great :)
