Buzz/hum coming from dash around dials

I have a very loud hum/buzz sound coming from the dial panel. Fires up when I put the keys in the ignition spot (but don't actually start the car). The way it "powers up" when you first turn the car on sounds kind of like a computer fan. It is a pretty loud noise and very annoying.

Anyone had the similar noise? What is it and can it be fixed?

Is this a 6? 3? gen1? gen2?

I don't have this sound in my Gen1 3, but a little more info on what car it actually is may help :)

I have this noise on cold start in my Genwon, seems to be only on cold starts and goes away eventually. Frustrating!

Haven't been able to isolate, but it's somewhere just behind the dash.

Ah yes, sorry!

It's a 2006 (gen 1) 3 MPS.

Definitely sometimes seems worse than others, but it never goes away unlike what bodyboardingbum said. Whenever I stop at lights I can hear it.
