BIO:

Colombia’s first Red Bull Global Rallycross driver was GRC Lites’ fan favorite in 2014. This year, he’ll be a championship favorite.

Alejandro Fernandez spent the first half of his rookie Lites season paying his dues and adapting to the car. Though he missed the main event in the season opener at X Games Austin, Fernandez and his family-funded team took the miss in stride and pushed forward. He took his first podium at Daytona International Speedway in August, and from there he snagged two more, in the second race at the Port of Los Angeles and six days later at DirtFish Rally School.

The late-season surge enabled him to climb to third in points, within striking distance of runner-up and international Lites champion Kevin Eriksson. Not bad for a rookie.

Fernandez’s ascent through the world of motorsports has come in only a few short years. After racing BMX bikes, he switched to go-karts and raced in some of the top events in the world under the tutelage of Indianapolis 500 winner Buddy Rice. That experience was enough to put together a Lites program last year, and the Bogota-born Fernandez hasn’t looked back since.

Last year’s Lites champion, Mitchell DeJong, finished third in points as a rookie before a breakout season last year. It won’t be a shock if Fernandez does the same thing in 2015.
