Hi all, I've got my '06 MPS6 booked in to have the VVT Actuator replaced at a cost of $1500 at a mazda dealer here in Perth.
I'm just wondering if I should have the boys at Mazda do anything else whilst they have the engine apart putting in the new VVT actuator??
Given my lack of mechanical knowledge I'm at the mercy of the Mazda dealer I'm going to so just want to make sure I don't get fuc*ed over. I'd just be pissed if 6 months down the track they tell me I should have done such and such at the time of getting the actuator replaced.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Fletch

Is mazda paying for it?

Hi FLETCH, I'd be interested to see any photos or mechanic's summary of the work undertaken, just for future reference. Can you scan and post the (relevant parts of the) Mazda invoice when it is completed please? It will form an interesting base for future reference for others. Anyway, how come this work is required? Did something come apart or go out of spec?

Info's here Doug, was a common problem on some DISI engines
Noisey valves at startup - MPS 6, MPS 3 Gen I, CX7 2.3T

Thx Chris. Read and saved TSB in my library

Nope mazda won't cover it as car is out of warranty. They tell me if the VVT actuator gets to the point of failure I'm up for a 6K engine rebuild.

quick question, how do you tell whether a 3MPS may be affected by the VVT issue? To me it sounds like a noisy engine, but I haven't been able to compare it to any other 3's .
Since I purchased mine used, I'm unsure if it's been replaced already.

Huh? Full rebuild? I don't think so .. From memory it's a $60 part and can be replaced in an hour or so.. Mine was done same day
@ darkness.. A nasty rattle at start up.
$1500 VVT actuator install??
"Replaced in an hour or so..."
That can't possibly be a service of $1500 value.
I'm wondering if a dealer somewhere has just gotten themselves in deep doodoo.

Belay that, according to the TSB chris posted its 4.5 hours worth of work...
