Default [WA] Need some help - Workshops and a Twin Turbo RX7 with a few problems

( Dunno if i got this in the right section, Mods pls move if need be )

My Brothers twin turbo RX7 has got blue/black smoke coming out of the exhaust pretty badly from what ive been told, i got a few questions:

    - Anyone know a reliable workshop North of the River that could take a look at it ?
    - What could be the issue/s ?
    - What type of costs would he be looking at

I know it could be related to a number of things, but i'd like to get some "rough causes etc" so he has something to go on

    Thanks in advance

Blue smoke is oil, isn't it? Other than that, might need a friendly dorrito owner to come along and help out

Go to Top Racing in Cannington they specialise in RX7's.

Its not NOR but they know what they are doing with RX7's so its worth the extra 20min drive.

    Thanks for feedback
Ive spoken to my Bro, apparently its ok to drive
He has been told that too much oil is being dumped ( not too sure where its dumping the oil )
Its off to Fabcar's workshop, where he bought it from, will let you know results

Ok, just got news, not good

Turbo is dead, not sure if its the main or the back up or how a twin turbo works exactely
Its gonna be a costly one, a rebuild i think
He is going to see if it can be covered under warranty, he got an extended one when he got the car - fingers crossed coz he doesn't have the 10k to get it fixed

So is it the turbo that needs to be rebuilt or is the motor fuc*ed cause the turbo crapped itself out?

Rotaries are awesome but maintenance and rebuilds are way too expensive- he'd be better off buying an import engine/ front cut from Japan and dropping the engine into his car!!!

    Hi Fletch, good question
I'm getting a few different stories from him
Im more than certain one of the turbos is cactus, that may have resulted in engine wear

Yeah, i've heard alot of stories in regards to the high maintenance of rotaries especially a twin turbo rx7
If only my Brother had spoken to me before he bought the vehicle

As for warranty, thats void, the fine print states there are certain conditions that must be met for a warranty claim
Something about using certian workshops and getting a checklist of stuff done ( sounds like the usual BS )
So looks like its gonna sit in the garage until the funds are available

I did mention to him it may be cheaper to do a transplant

    TurboRX7.com > RX-7 Vacuum Diagrams
    TurboRX7.com > 20B Rotary Engine Information

dont know if that's of any help
that's for 20B engines, which if he has a twin turbo, is what it should be, unless he has an aftermarket TT set up on a different engine

Yeah could be turbos or worst case apex seals, they wear out and usually means engine out, taken apart and rebuild, i.e. new apex seals, gaskets, check end plates and housings....

The problem in rebuilding them is not the engines them selves rather the ppl carrying out the rebuild, you need to find someone who knows what they're doing and wont mess things up, they're a very simple engines but the way they function is marvelous.

I would start by looking at the turbos, they do and can give the ghost and need rebuilding or better yet he can look into a single turbo conversion if the original units are , plus the original setup is rather complicated and can be a real PITA to sort out when something goes wrong.

I looked into buying a Series 8 FD3S RX7 before I ended up with the MPS so that is from researching them for numerous months and speaking to other ppl who own rotarys...

    Good luck

Update on this too, some good news after all this
Another stupid workshop in Perth, who dont know what the hell they are doing

My Bro has since taken the vehicle to Rotor Motion and they fixed it for about $300 or so
Turns out, the workshops prior to this un-plugged some cables that where meant to be attached to the ECU and other components, like the turbo
Car runs like a dream now ...

I've owned multiple RX7's and rebuilt many 13b engiens (turbo and non turbo)....
Blue smoke is not a good thing... usually the rear oil control ring is flogged out, due to a few things... mostly the wrong oil been used (synthetic is bad... very bad) or oil starvation.

If the apex seals are gone it will normally make it run like rubbish.

Most people do unplug the emission gear though... could have been that they unplugged...
