Thread: Best Mufflers DP

  1. #1

Default Best Mufflers DP NOW WITH PICS!!!

    Hey guys.

Chris is starting to produce these.

    I was his second customer.

Fantastic. The quality is second to none.

Bellmouth, huge 100 cell (very high flowing) metal cat. (not like on of the little guys on a CPE). This replaces both upper and aft cat. (so its similar concept to a cpe or cobb compared to the corksport). oh and its all stainless.

    Welds... beautiful..
    fitment.. excellent...
    CEL's.. none.

And it has picked up some impressive power.

Chris is the owner/installer/fabricator. He has yeeeears of experience. And it shows in his work.

Hopefully his 1st customer on here will stick his head in and back me up...

    Check him out

Yep, Interested to know ballpark pricing, and do they fit them?? If they do, how much for that too?

$1450 + a cast bellmouth (Chris can source these) .. and that was with the more expensive 100 cell per inch (CPI) metal cat. fittment inclusive. (you may be paying a little more for the experience Chris has in the exhaust industry, but I'd do it again in a heart beat)

I trusted him 100% with my car.. and I definatly am a fussy bugger. I have never trusted an exhaust shop before.. I have always watched them like a hawk (much to their dissaproval). Chris, he is a car nut.. he will take good care of you.

This is a top notch piece, with a high quality cat. The cat has flanges either side, so in the event you do stuff your cat (you wont) it can be easily replaced with out removing the whole DP. The flanges are all sleived, and not just butt to butt flanges.

No CEL, welds are almost artistic, and the fitment is excellent.

all that aside..... the power... mmmmm hahahahaha.. its excellent.

Mine was the first downpipe that Chris fitted,
Doc has pretty much summed up the quality of workmanship, and has attention to detail is second to none.
I'm sure that anyone who has had work done by Chris will vouch for his quality, his reputation precedes him you just have to stroll around his workshop to see some of his customers cars (which explains why he's so damn busy all the time).

I had purchased a second hand cp-e downpipe and taken it into Chris to enquire about the fitting, the first thing he questioned was the legality of the small cat fitted by cp-e, so he recommended a larger, more locally compliant cat be fitted.
From what I can gather the only thing he kept from the downpipe was the cast bellmouth ( he is not a fan of divorced downpipes, and highly praised the cast bell mouth design), the rest he went about re-fabricating to relocate and accommodate the larger cat and also incorporate a larger flex section.

I will send him an email inviting him to join the forum to see if we can get an idea of pricing on these items, I would assume his price would be inclusive of the fitting, as he is a fussy bugger and likes to make sure everything he makes fits perfectly.
And he really loves fitting downpipes to the MPS's, its his favourite car to work on

Oh, and driving next to Doc, on Friday evening (adhering to all the local speed limits), even on his stock cat back, that car had a much nicer, more aggressive, slightly burbly note to it, not just the usual stock exhaust hoover sounds.

Yeh Chris is a top guy. i can also vouch for his work!

Love it how he cleans the paintwork on his falcon with Mr Sheen!!!!

Bit off topic but can any exhaust place can make a test/race pipe right?i dont get why ppl spend like $150US to get it from Corksport or even $199US from Streetunit.

EDIT : I just spoke to Chris.. He hasnt played around with the Gen 2 MPS 3 yet.
Told me to come bring the car down this sat morning so he can check it out.

If your after a race pipe, I would highly recommend Chris, I am not familar with the CS, or Streetunit variations, but I had issues with a TXS unit and the compatibility with the flanges, the TXS pipe had flat flanges where the MPS uses the donut style flanges to allow for the stock exhaust to pivot as required, this was eliminated when mated to the flat flanges (subsequently the bolts would fall out and the exhaust would leak), Chris completely re flanged the pipe with the donut style flanges and refitted it, I never had any further issues with it.

A lot of exhaust shops will frown upon removing a second cat if factory fitted, I believe the gen 1's can get away with it as the compliance at the time of release allowed for one cat, the gen 2's might legally require 2 cats for this reason, however a good spun metal cat is worlds better than the factory ceramic units.

After a quick chat with Chris last night I have been informed that from a legal standpoint that if a car is produced with 2 cats, it must retain 2 cats with any exhaust modifications, same rule goes for mufflers, sure you can probably pass emission's and noise tests with less of either than stock, but if you get sent to the pits, you may need to fix a few things before they let you back on the road.

so the cpe cat may not be sufficient to meet emissions, but did he say anything in terms of flow?

Depends if it's collapsed or not.. I believe matts cat in the second hand dp had crapped the bed and the guts were loose. That would not help flow.

And no it wouldn't pass a visual emmisions inspection over the pits.

Keep in mind some systems may pass a tailpipe sniffer test, just fail a visual.

Lucky we don't have to worry about this just yet.

Let me know how this goes Arden, I'm looking at getting a race pipe too. I'd get him to do it. Where is he located?

My plans are to just get the RP and to get the resonator replaced with a straight thru pipe.

Wont be doing the Downpipe until warranty goes so no point doing anything else.

    Also,
from the peeps in the U.S, the sound of the zorst doesnt change too much after installing the Race Pipe.
Its only after removing the resonator that u get the sexy rumble.

    this is true..

Talk to Chris... He will take care of your RP

you could always get th DP swapped out if need be.. after its been installed.. its much less of an issue to swap it back.. due to the sensors and the nuts being lubricated with high temp thread lube.

    Its worth it imo
